Halo 3 Hype Machine
Why the beta needs to rock our faces off.

US, February 5, 2007 - As far as Halo fans go, there aren't many bigger than me around the IGN offices. I lived Halo for nearly half of my collegiate career. I waited in Times Square through the bitter November cold with nothing but free Mountain Dew to keep me warm for the midnight launch of Halo 2. What followed was far more hours of lost sleep than could even be considered close to healthy. Now we are just months away from Master Chief's first appearance on Xbox 360 and the beta is on the horizon.
Why don't I find myself jumping for joy?
Bungie and Microsoft have been more than just a little bit guarded when it comes to their little golden egg. Perhaps Bungie is trying to avoid bumping the already high expectations to impossible levels. Or maybe Microsoft already knows that the game will be a hit and doesn't feel the need to spend resources hyping Halo 3 at this early stage. Either way, no news is not good news when the only material we've been fed to fill the void hasn't exactly been mind blowing.

The final game probably won't look like this.
Last November, Bungie released a set of screenshots -- the first for Halo 3. I think the collective question on everybody's minds was, "Are they serious?" The screens don't look bad, but I hope I'm not alone in saying that I expected a lot more. No need for panic yet. These screenshots are for a game that was at least a year away from completion. The final game won't look like this. Nor will it look like the minute-long Monday Night Football ad (that was CG, after all) or the more recent Brute video documentary. Bungie assured us of this on their weekly update just before Christmas.
