One piece of artwork and the tease that it'll take 10th Anniversary of the series in November is the only whispers of Valve revealing Half Life 2: Episode 3.
Not being that patient with the wait, I slipped back into City 17 for a brief hour or three the other night while the flatmates were busy transcribing gaming instruction manuals into a multitude of languages.
Though the halting loading times between sections are still jarring (and making me inadvertently tag the game as the first I'll upload to my HD to try out the new full install option on the Dashboard this autumn) the rollercoaster ride through City 17 is still as pitch-perfect as ever. The shift from the oppressive opening scenes to the breathless chase sequence as you dodge Combine attack forces through the sewers that honeycomb the city's foundations is a joy.
Not that I really need to reiterate that fact to you about a four-year-old game. If you haven't played the PC original you probably hooked up with Alyx Vance for the first time in the Xbox Original port. Me, with a pre-Stonehenge PC rig and never being one for diminished quality, I held out in hope for an eventual Xbox 360 and was awarded handsomely. Therefore, I'm coming to the party late.
Discussion rages about the Episode 3 storyline and content, especially in light of Episode 2's cliff-hanger ending and the appearance of the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device in Portal. I'm looking forward to the day I put the disc (or download through Xbox Live) the concluding chapter in Gordon Freeman's adventures. For now though, I'm enjoying a romp through a game that still feels as fresh, as fantastic as the first time I played through it.
