XL FAQ: Headphones

The following FAQ provides answers to frequently asked questions regarding the use of headphones at MatchBox360 XL:

Do I need to bring headphones for sound at XL?
No. All the XL iiyama monitors have built in speakers and a headphone socket available. You do not have to use headphones however they do provide better sound quality and may improve your XL gaming experience. It is simply personal preference.

Why would I need to use headphones at XL?
More and more gamers at XL are finding the use of headphones improves their gameplay. You dont need to use headphones however the benefits are simply that you hear exactly what's going on in your game and can help people block out the distractions of a competitive environment.

I don't want to have to bring my own pair of headphones, can I hire some at XL?
Yes. There are a limited number of Sennheiser HD-201 (http://www.sennheiser.co.uk/uk/icm.nsf/root/products_sennheiser_headphones_dj_500155) headphones available for hire at XL. Headphones are available for hire from reception:

Hire: £5 per day
Deposit: £10 (refundable on return of headphones in working condition)

Can I bring my own headphones to use?
Yes. As long as the headphones can plug into 3.5mm input on the side of the iiyama monitor (http://community.matchbox360.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6219) that we use at XL and do not require an external power supply.

Can I use my wireless headphones?
No. All wireless headphones are not allowed at XL due to external power source required.

I use a set of headphones that have a Red and White phono output, could use these at XL?
All headphones must be plugged directly into the 3.5mm input available on the side of the iiyama monitors. You may use an additional phono to 3.5mm adaptor (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&DOY=23m5&ModuleNo=1214&criteria=) however anyone found unplugging the audio cables from the back of the iiyama monitors ([URL="http://community.matchbox360.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6219) will be banned from using headphones.

Could you list what the headphones must have so I know what to look for when buying them?

Wired only.
Does not require an external power source.
Can be plugged into the 3.5mm headphone socket.

Hi guys,

I want to use my Seinheisser 'in ear' headphones as i've come accustomed to them now. I know i can plug them into the monitor no problem, i just want to know if it will be viable using them as the cord isnt the longest.

My current set up is the RED/WHITE from VGA cable to adapters which gives a bit more length. I was just wondering how far the seats are from the monitors,

If its a similar set up to PC Lans then i should be fine and can check @ Omega Sektor at the weekend, if not i'll be bringing my Seinhiesser 150's out of storage assuming they still work ^^

Appreciate your response

You'll be sat no more than 4 feet from the TV, most guys like to get up close to the screens so you could be a lot closer. Using the red/white phono cables from the VGA lead is a big no-no though, as we've had a whole lot of problems with that in the past. It's the 3.5mm jack on the side of the screen or the built in speakers.

Saying all that though, you may want to look at getting a female -> male 3.5mm extension from Maplin?

We also rent out Sennheiser HD-201's at the venue as well, prices stated above :)

So will the SS Neckband be available for purchase at the event, as one of my clan members has ordered a pair online, but is going to cancel their order if he can purchase them on the day. Thanks...

Yes, SteelSeries will be at the event with products available to buy. Just think of the carbon emissions your saving not having to lug that pair to the venue ;)

Please read the above FAQ if you have any questions regarding headphones.

Just to make a few things clear...

You may not unplug the audio cables attached to the monitors.
You may not use wireless headphones.

Any players found doing so may result in forfeit of your fixture.

I dont have my own headset, but im happy to see that you can hire them.

Without sounding rude are the headsets available for hire good, are they just a headset or do they have surround sound etc?
