Was actually thinking about using my Wii and gettin Super Smash Bros. Brawl today?

Anyone playing it? Is it any good or pure hype?

Demo or real thing Jay? I've been playing the demo and loved it - my only issue with it is that multiplayer matches take aaaages, and aren't really suited to a quick blast.

Retail, although it's still sat in it's wrapper at home at the mo as I decided to go out on the lash instead last night.

neyo's been giving pretty good reports so I'm looking forward to it tonight.

I put a *lot* of time into the last one so I'm hoping to get my badass piloting skillz dusted off and in use tonight.. And the multiplayer can only be an improvement over BF:MC anyway...

Errr...this is the "who's playing SSBB" thread. GTFO!

Anyways from what I've seen BF:BC isnt an improvement.

The multiplayer rocks - and at least it actually has a campaign mode this time!

SSBB - Smash Bros. always seemed a little too random for me. Even if all the moves and timing was mastered, one button masher could still come out victorious.

Same with 99% of any beat em ups tbh.

Nah, the series has been very competitive, and Brawl has been picked up by EVO Championship series (http://www.evo2k.com/) (basically, the creme de la creme of tournaments for fighting games).

Brawl is definitely worth a purchase. It's probably the ultimate compendium of Nintendo's history. So many modes to play, trophies to unlock, and even if you get bored with all the game has to offer, you can create your own fun with the (admittedly, limited in the amount of parts) stage-creator and make your own rules. I created a stage with two goals and tweaking the ruleset a bit, I was playing football with my brother. I'll post up how when I can.

I'll pick this up on Thursday. I've been waiting for it for so long, because I've been needing a reason to get rid of all that dust on my Wii. Can't wait :D

I've got it! Played it for the first time today. I really like the variety of control methods. Not only does it give you the choice of how you want to play it but it means you can very easily play 4 player multiplayer because some people can use gamecube controllers while others use the wii remotes

I was basically going to say this, so I quoted it instead. God I'm lazy.

I'll post my friend code when I can be bothered :p

Whats better to use...gamecube pad or wii remotes?

DinnyHoon

Gamecube pad all the way. Even though Brawl's controls are pretty simple, I find that for a game that fast, you can't rely on the often flimsy controls of a wiimote/nunchuk combo. The layout of the GCN face buttons perfectly compliment the functions in Smash Bros. For example, A (or the C stick) is your normal attack, whereas the smaller B button is for your special moves.

And you get to use the good ol' GCN controller! Who doesn't love that beautifully comfortable achievement in ergonomics?

gamecube pads are much better to play with than a wiimote or anythink else SSBB is beast

I have to agree with DinnyHoon. The games much too fast paced to be faffing around the wiimote + nunchuck combo.
I also tried the wiimote on it's side today which I thought was quite good and simple to use. No unnecessary buttons anywhere

May be its cos I've never played the game before or may be its cos I'm trying to use the wiimote+chuck or may be I'm just having a thick attack...but I'm just not gettin this game tbh.

Which is why SSBB is a poor choice for competitions IMO.

Beat the living **** out of the characters til their damage gets really high (around 100% should do it). Then try and knock them off the arena. That's the objective summed up in a very basic way.

Note the IMO in my post - in my opinion, Smash Bros. sucks for competitive play. Far too random for me.

But you're not getting it that Smash Bros. can be a competitive game, and with the right settings, it's perfect for competitive play.

Exactly. People who play SSB on the MLG circuit choose a specific character per season which they'll use. I think that makes the game alot more exciting considering different characters have different advantages over certain characters.

I get it - basically, powerups, damage modifiers, smash balls, etc would need to be disabled to decrease the random factor.

My annoyance with competitive SB is the Smashes, which never seem to propel the character away at an angle proportionate to the one they were hit at. For example, a front facing horizontal smash on two same height characters (say, Mario v Mario) should result in a (mostly) horizontal propulsion away from the smash. However, it doesn't. Often, it results in the character being propelled at a (mostly) vertical angle. No problem for a lot of the time, they end up ringing out by height - but what if there is a platform above? Character hits platform, doesn't get ringed out. Yet if the smash propulsion had been proportionate to the angle of incidence, the character would have ringed out by width.

evidently the Wii cant process this calculation
