GTA4 cough, cough. no, i dont doubt for a second that this game will be fantastic ever since the first ive been absorbed to MGS and this would be the best of icing on the cake.
The story through out all 3 has been fantastic and the closing chapter will surely be a fitting end. i like the way sony are marketing this, In my eyes, to veterans of the game, obviously appealing to the select rather than the many will provide a quality game to those who matter.

GTA4 cough, cough.

GTA is just a shoddy remake with a shoddy story, luckily Kojima actually knows how to make an old game feel new!

I have played all of the previous ones, but never got around to finishing 3 as I sold the ps2, (suprising, I know!) Rumour is you can play MGS1 too? If so then no doubt it will be amazing.

This game is truly incredible. I've just finished Act 1.

DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED ACT 1
What do you reckon Liquid/Ocelot meant when he said "we are not clones of our father"? It sounded to me like he said that the pair of them weren't the result of Les Enfants Terribles, but Snake showed no reaction to the sentence. Also, Act 1 is called "Liquid Sun", and Act 2 is called "Solid Sun". Perhaps Act 3 could mean a return for Solidus? Or even better, Big Boss himself?

I don't remember a single bit of the stories from the first 3 games TBH. I'd be going into MGS4 with zero recollection of what the hell has been going on. Kojima's stories can be too twisted for their own good - plenty of people say they love the story, but don't know why and can't explain the story to anyone else.

OK :p here it is in spoiler tags:

DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T COMPLETED ACT 2, UNLESS YOU'RE TERBINATOR
The Patriots are an impregnable AI. I don't know how that possibly solves anything about their war against Liquid Ocelot, but that's the major revelation.

Meryl hates Campbell, and describes him as a 'womanising piece of ****'. Campbell later introduces you to his wife, Rosemary. As in, RAIDEN'S Rosemary. Apparently, Raiden went off the rails after the Big Shell, and was eventually presumed dead. Campbell sort of swooped in on the rebound. On the comment that she's old enough to be his daughter, he said "yeah, lucky me!"

Also, Raiden's actually alive, but I haven't met him in person yet. He's hit me up on the codec, though.

I'm on Act 4 now. It's rather special.

Act 4 takes place in a derelict Shadow Moses. As you walk around memorable places such as the heliport and the tank hangar, you get flashbacks of MGS1. when you go up the stiars in the heliport to get to the vent, you get a flashback of Snake spotting the surveillance camera for the first time, and the camera drops off its perch, right in front of Snake. It's all very emotional. The background music is The Best Is Yet To Come, the song that plays over the end credits of the original MGS.

Act 3:
Snake meets up with Big Mama, who reveals herself to be Eva (from MGS3). She is the mother of Solid and Liquid snake. She tells the story behind Metal Gear, Les Enfants Terribles, and The Patriots.

The Patriots was an organisation founded after the events of Snake Eater, by Major Zero, Big Boss (aka Jack, Naked Snake), Eva, Ocelot, Sigint (aka Donald Anderson, the DARPA chief), and Para-Medic. Some time after the events of Portable Ops, Big Boss was comatosed. While he was in the coma, Major Zero brought it upon himself to clone Big Boss without his permission, using Eva as a surrogate mother. After Solid and Liquid had been born, Big Boss awoke from his coma, learned of Zero's doings, and broke away from the Patriots in anger. Taking Ocelot with him, he vowed to kill his clones and destroy The Patriots. At the end of Metal Gear 2, Big Boss is supposedly killed by his son David, aka Solid Snake. Boss' body was taken from the scene, and he was kept alive via all kinds of machinery. He still exists as a braindead mess, kept alive by computers. After learning of his father's peril, Liquid Snake vowed to finish the job against the Patriots, and Major Zero. Zero disbanded the original Patriots, and set up a series of AI's to continue the Patriots' work. They are: GW, TJ, AL and TR - the initials of the four presidents on Mount Rushmore. They are all run by one core AI, known as JD, or John Doe.

Big Mama shows the body of Big Boss, a skinless vegetable hooked up to all kinds of machines in the back of a van. Snake waves his hand over the body, and it goes nuts, waving frantically. Suddely, news comes in that Liquid and his men are closing in on their location, and Snake and Eva make a quick getaway on her trademark Triumph bike, followed by 3 decoy vans (so the actual van containing Boss can slip into the night). As the last van is destroyed, the PMC realise that Big Boss isn't there, and go off in search of the real thing. As Eva lies wounded from a dramatic crash, Raging Raven appears, wishing to do battle with Snake.

One boss fight later, Snake and Eva walk to the dock, where they spot Liquid sitting there smoking a cigar, watching a destroyed van sink into the deep. Snake and Liquid have a bit of a hand-to-hand, before Liquid gets the better of his brother, and stabs him in the shoulder. Eva, who constantly addresses Liquid as Jack (which must be his real name), watches helplessly as their sons fight to kill each other. While Snake lies injured, Liquid hops onto a boat, which is ambushed by the US military and Rat Patrol (Meryl and her gang). He takes this opportunity to Show off his new nanomachines, Guns of The Patriots, and with the push of a button, creates a global ceasefire as every registered firearm on Earth ceases to function. The only ones that work are the ones he allows (ie the guns of the Frogs), and Snake's (he has old nanomachines). After blowing up a ship or two, Liquid tosses the body of Big Boss onto Rat Patrol's burning vessel, and his remains catch fire. An explosion is triggered (from... somewhere), and everyone lands on the bank. 2 of Meryl's Rat Patrol die, and she is saved from drowning by Johnny (the guy who always craps himself in every MGS game), who uses CPR to save his commander. Meanwhile, Eva dies in Snake's arms.

In the briefing for Act 4, it is revealed that Liquid is going to Shadow Moses. He plans to take the rail gun from Metal Gear REX, and use it to launch a nuke from an Arsenal Gear clone known as Outer Haven. With the nuke, he is going to destroy the orbiting sattelite containing JD, and use GW to control the other 3 AI's of The Patriots, effectively controlling the world. He has GW in his power because he rebuilt it after it was half-destroyed at the Big Shell.

Act 4 (by far the best part of the whole series):
Snake lands at the heliport, trying to ambush Liquid in REX's hangar. After working his way through the Shadow Moses base (including a cool sniper battle on the snowfield with Crying Wolf), he finds the battered and bruised REX, with its railgun missing. Vamp appears, and Snake beats him by injecting him with nanomachine suppressors (the stuff you see him stick in his own neck all the time). Raiden appears, and fights Vamp atop REX while Otacon tries to restart REX, and Snake fends off a LOT of Gekko with a railgun. Eventually, Raiden defeats Vamp, who finally dies in Naomi's arms. Naomi explains that Vamp was never truly immortal. His nanomachines allowed his body to heal so quickly that he basically couldn't be killed. Snake's suppressors ceased this activity, and Vamp sustained fatal injuries from his battle with Raiden. Naomi explains that she is also being kept alive by nanomachines (her own invention), for she has a terminal cancer that is being kept at bay. She injects herself with suppressors, and dies minutes later. Otacon, who has had a fleeting romance with her throughout the title, mourns. That poor bugger never gets a break! First Wolf, then Emma, now Naomi.

Meanwhile, the Mk.II is done prepping REX, and Snake takes control of the beast. The player (ie me) prepares for the most awesome moment in the entire series as Snake guides REX down the long emergency tunnel used at the end of MGS1, crushing Gekko in its path. As it reaches daylight, and the scene of Liquid's death in the first game, Metal Gear RAY (from MGS2) appears, controlled by Liquid. RAY fires a missile at REX, which misses and instead hits the wall, most of which then falls on Raiden's face. EPIC BATTLE TIME!

After REX defeats RAY in what can only be described as the greatest boss battle in gaming history, Liquid and Snake jump out of their respective nuclear bipeds. Liquid crawls along the floor, and deja-vu style, Snake says "Fox?", which is immediately followed by Liquid screaming "DIIIIEEE" with is final breath. Or so you may think. Liquid's cold, dead hand clenches into a fist, and cool as you like, he jumps back up onto his feet, and steps into Outer Haven (which at this point is right behind him in the water). Outer Haven then heads straight into the pier where Snake is licking his wounds, and is just inches away from crushing our hero when Raiden awakens. His right arm is stuck under a huge rock. He cuts it off, and uses superhuman strength to stop Outer Haven (which is pretty ****ing big) in its tracks. Snake is able to escape as Raiden is crushed by the behemoth.

Act 5 (only one paragraph, as I haven't actually started the gameplay yet):
In the briefing for the final act, we learn that Liquid is to launch the nuke from the Bering Strait. Mei Ling captains the USS Missouri, the last working vessel in the world (it was decommisioned before all this nanomachine lark), and the gang ambush Outer Haven as its readying its railgun. Snake, Meryl and Johnny are literally catapulted from Missouri into Haven, but Johnny doesn't make it across and drowns. Meryl says she'll meet Snake at GW, which is at one end of the ship. Snake is at the other. Between Snake and GW, there is quite a bit of defence.

(I know I'm double posting, but this post is huge, and deserves it)

Act 5 and Ending
In the briefing for the final act, we learn that Liquid is to launch the nuke from the Bering Strait. Mei Ling captains the USS Missouri, the last working vessel in the world (it was decommisioned before all this nanomachine lark), and the gang ambush Outer Haven as its readying its railgun. Snake, Meryl and Johnny are literally catapulted from Missouri into Haven, but Johnny doesn't make it across and drowns. Meryl says she'll meet Snake at GW, which is at one end of the ship. Snake is at the other.

Snake battles his way from the bow into the centre of the ship, where he finds Meryl unconscious. Suddenly, he's ambushed by Frogs (the PMC, not the reptile). After killing all of them, Johnny (Akiba) appears, and as he's leaning ver a now-conscious Meryl, Screaming Mantis (of the B+B group) appears. In a battle so similar to the original Psycho Mantis conflict, Snake defeats her, and as she lies on the ground, her armour floats together, and the ghost of Psycho Mantis appears. He and Snake talk about the battle in Shadow Moses, and once again, Mantis tries to read Snake's mind. Unfortunately, he can't find the memory card this time. He blames this on Snake having improved hardware, and disappears once again.

Meryl tells Snake to carry on to the stern, where GW is located. She and Johnny tackle another Frog ambush with awesome Mr and Mrs Smith-style teamwork, and Johnny asks Meryl to marry him. She says yes. Meanwhile, Snake shakes off dozens of dwarf Gekko as he runs the length of the ship, until he is ambushed AGAIN by more Frogs. He collapses, and things look grim until Raiden appears, with a sword in his mouth. He lets Snake go on, and prepares for a knife battle with the Frogs.

After more running, Snake finally reaches the last security measure before GW - a corridor filled with mother****ing microwaves. Not the oven type, but the radiation type. He struggles through the hallway as the artificial muscles in his suit explode one by one, and he becomes less and less mobile. When he finally makes it to GW, it resembles the graveyeard in which The Boss is buried (remember it from MGS3?). As Otacon is uploading the virus, Snake is swarmed by Dwarf Gekko, and footage is shown of Meryl and Raiden falling victim to the mighty Frogs. Suddenly, though, the Frogs go mental, and start wriggling about on the floor and punching each other. The Dwarf Gekko fall lifeless among each other. The worm upload is complete. Suddenly, Naomi appears on a bunch of screens, with a pre-recorded message that reveals that she programmed the virus to remotely destroy the entire Patriots AI - not just GW. The Patriots are dead.

The game skips forward, and Snake is lying on top of Outer Haven, half dead from exhaustion. Otacon leaves Snake's side to fetch help, and guess who comes onto the scene? Liquid and Snake endure one last fistfight. As the game plays iconic music from each MGS title, the life bars of Snake and Liquid change style, depending on which song is playing. It's epic in every way. Eventually, Snake finally defeats Liquid, who dies at his feet.

Epilogue
Meryl is getting married! As she's staring at herself in a full-length mirror (like all brides do), Campbell appears. He congratulates his daughter, and starts to walk away. Meryl shouts after him, and when he turns around, she's pointing a gun at him. He walks up to her, and points the gun towards his head. However, she takes the bullets out, and simply asks him to walk her up the aisle, which he does. During the tiny outdoor ceremony, Drebin storms onto the scene in his tank, and springs open the back door. Confetti and doves fly out of the back. Mei Ling turns to Otacon and asks where Snake is, and Otacon laughs about how he always keeps everyone waiting. He sees Campbell standing alone, who quietly says "Snake, thank you."

Cut to a hospital room, where Raiden is recovering. He is now completely human. Rose comes in with a silver-haired boy, who Raiden knows as "Campbell's kid". Rose explains to Jack that she did not miscarry like she told him, and that John (the lad) is his son. She posed as Campbell's wife for years to keep John a secret from The Patriots. Jack seems apprehensive to show any emotion, until John says to him, "you're cool, like a comic book hero" before playing with his toy sword. Rose and Jack exchange the usual promises of "I'll do my best for this family" and blah blah blah.

Snake is finally shown, in The Boss' graveyard. He is stood facing the gravestone of Big Boss, and says "I have to endure one more punishment. This will be my final mission." He kneels down, and puts a gun to his mouth. The camera pans away, and a gunshot is heard.

Back at the wedding, a drunk Drebin reveals that he was under the orders of The Patriots, as well as Meryl's Rat Patrol team, without even knowing it. He writes RATP T01 (Rat Patrol team 01) on the floor, which rearranges to the word PATR10T. Sunny asks Otacon where Snake is, and he says he's sick, and needs to be away for a while. Sunny then asks if they can go and see him. Otacon declines, and breaks down into tears. He answers, "Snake is sick. He needs some rest."

The credits roll, starting with the voice actor credits. The last one says "BIG BOSS - Richard Doyle". As soon as this line hits the centre of the screen, all the other credits disappear. Eventually, the credits screen fades away, and Snake is revealed on his hands and knees, clasping his gun. A voice behind him says "No need for you to go just yet". Snake staggers to his feet, and turns to find Big Boss, stood next to a bald man in a wheelchair. The two engage in a bit of CQC, followed by an emotional hug. Boss says "It's over, son. Time to put away the gun." He reveals that the body Liquid burned was that of Solidus, the only clone that was genetically identical to Big Boss. He then explains that he was put in a sort of stasis for years. Just before GW was destroyed, the location of Zero was discovered, and Eva and Ocelot rebuilt Boss using body parts from Liquid and Solidus. Ocelot had used hypnosis to unlock Liquid's mind, and become his mental doppleganger. Boss then turns to the bald vegetable in the wheelchair - Zero.

Zero created the AI's when Boss, Ocelot and Eva had left The Patriots. Unfortunately, as he grew older, he grew more and more incapable of controlling the system, which made a collosal error of judgement, resulting in the war economy. Boss mentions that of all of the founding members of The Patriots - Para-Medic, Ocelot, Eva - only he and Zero remain alive. He turns the support machine off, and Zero dies an uncomfortable death. Soon after, the Foxdie begins to affect Boss, who is now struggling to breathe. He asks Snake to take him over to 'her'. Snake carries him to The Boss' gravestone, which is sat beside a bouquet of flowers. Boss kneels over his master's grave, and says "Ever since the day I killed The Boss with my own hands, I was already dead."

He turns to Snake, and tells him that he never thought of him as a son, but he always respected him as a soldier. He staggers to his feet, and achingly gives his master one final salute. He says to Snake, "it is almost time for me to go. And with me, the last ember of this fruitless war dies out. And a new future will be born. That new world is yours to live in. Not as a Snake, but as a man." He offers his hand to Snake, but falls to the ground.

With minutes left, he says "Zero and I, Liquid and Solidus, we all fought a long bloody war for out liberty. We fought to free ourselves from nations, and systems, and norms, and and ages. But the only liberty we found was on the inside, trapped within those limits.the Boss and I may have chosen different paths, but in the end we were both trapped inside the same cage - Liberty. But you.. you have been given freedom. Freedom to be outside. You are nobody's tool now. No-one's toy. You are no longer a prisoner of fate. You are no longer a seed of war. It's time for you to see the outside world with your own eyes. Your body and your soul are your own. Forget about us. Live for yourself, and find a new lease on life. Boss, you only need one Snake. No, the world will be better off without Snakes."

Snake lights a cigar, and hands it to Boss. Boss takes one drag, and with his final breath, he says "This is good, isn't it?"

Credits.

Well then you've hurt Sony the best you could. The worse thing consumers can do to them is buy the PS3 as a blu-ray player and never buy any accessories or games for it, because they are already losing money on every PS3 and not buying anything means they arent recooping anything back. Maybe we've stubled across MS' new tactic? ;)

Oh wow this game is good. I borrowed my m8s ps3 and just bought the game and its wellworth it. Even if pppl are put off by the long confusing story, theres still enough there in the game play to be a great game (even though you'd be missing out, cinematicly its the best thing iv'e seen).

But anyone else think that the third act sucked balls (apart from the bike/boss part) like realy realy sucked balls. Also what is the point of the beuty part of the boss battles, they just walk at you slowly, dodge the odd attack, and if your poo enough they grab you and give you a nice health draining hug... thats it.
And the liquid/ocelot fight was good and epic and all, but it was dificult and tiresome (took me 40-50 minutes).
But who cares, the game is worth buying just for act four. Been waitin ten years to drive that big metal bastaad!

Played some MGS4 yesterday and I'm not all that convinced or rather I didn't like it much at all.. :/

As most of you hopefully know I am not biased with consoles or games [apart maybe EA generic sports stuff] and even though I don't have a PS3 yet I know I will buy one at some point. I've also never played any MGS game nor seen them being played, the very few of my real life friends that game either play PC or 360 games. I've been looking forward to play MGS4 as I wanted to know what it's all about.

I didn't play much, got past the beginning, the town, then met the woman, the guy who **** his pants and then mission briefing and got to a village part, so I'm sure I'm only in the beginning. This is in random order some of the things I've noticed, good/bad, again bearing in mind I've never played them before and didn't watch all the cutscenes. Only maybe half or less. Oh and I was playing in German [voiceover English though] and it was an SD, but fairly big TV.

The graphics look good overall, but there are some things that aren't so great. The beginning bombed out town all looks the same. I got lost a few times. The cars in the garage after jumping down the escalator looked really basic. And the stuff on the floor in the broken buildings all seemed too generic. I just feel there could have been more.
Soooo much loading. Sure there are many cutscenes, but couldn't there have been some more back ground loading? I thought the times of where you had to load every area individually for games that have had such a long development time was over?
The faces/body language in the phone calls doesn't move. They look like they're on a stick with just their lips moving.
Talking about moving, the noise you make with the oil barrel is unreal, especially when setting it down. I mean ok, you bang against the sides when walking fast, but still!
The enemy AI. I was playing on the second difficulty, Normal Snake [I think it's called], and it seemed so.. easy? Sure I died a few times, but there were times when I didn't use stealth and managed to not die by avoiding bullets from a tanks and five surrounding guys by running zig zag through a street?!
It seems so linear?
I loved it when running round in my barrel, set it down next to two guys and they said 'A barrel?!', circled round it, then tipped it over to reveal me crouching! :D
Talking about barrels, how the hell does he hide that in his skintight bodysuit?!
The cigarette that doesn't burn down the entire cutscene in the beginning with the big things, but I've been told the cigarette is some running joke?
The robot thing from the guy with the glasses. Reminds me of this robot: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091949/
More cutscene than actually playing the game. I have to say to that I dislike lengthy cutscenes and I'm aware that MGS4 is probably the wrong game for me then and I should rather stick to BioShock which did it brilliantly by telling the story through the audiodiaries. I mean, you know, it's bad when you think you're playing the game and suddenly think 'I bet a cutscene is gonna start after the next corner as I've already had like three mins of gameplay' and the cutscene actually starts around the corner..
The button pressing in cutscenes to add stuff [I presume?]. Good way to ensure people watch them.
Some of the cutscenes, like the one where you meet the woman I think which just seemed to be so badly written.
It all looks the same. Argh, that really annoyed me.
The menu structure. It really confused me, but I guess that will be better once I've played more.

Can't really think of much more now, but I'm really surprised I didn't like the game much, I mean I love stealth games, like Splinter Cell. Is all the stuff I mentioned like the rest of the game or does it change much?

If you've played all of the other MGS games then MGS 4 is on an entiriely different level

I'm pretty sure it was made for the fans of the previous games, and i absolutely love it from a hardcore fan point of view, but i'm pretty sure that if you hadn't played the others then you wouldn't even find it as amazing.

There are so many cut-scenes and references because they're trying to tie up all the loose ends of the previous games and stories to finish it all off. Hence another reason why "Played MGS 1, 2 & 3" should be under the requirements next to PS3 and controller.

Cigs are a running joke yeah.

The seemingly only annoyance i've had so far is the sheer amount of cheap arse/cleavage shots in the cutscenes. It's not even done subtly or sparesly like the previous games, it's ridicuosly over the top and makes me sad as to why they had to put that in to sell the game or something.

Dont get me wrong, it's amusing at first but by act 3 its just silly.

by act 3 the games boring and gameplay to cutscenes is 1:2 both in occurance and time

I'd say there's maybe one act where there's more cutscene than gameplay, and that's Act 5. The actual gameplay:cutscene ratio across the game is 2:1, which is what Kojima wanted.

I agree with Pirate Balloon though. This is a game for the fans.

Still shocking. I don't pay £40 (plus PS3, with MGS4 being the only reason I want to own one) for a game with 33% of the experience spent watching it rather than playing it.

My brother played this by running and gunning (he is a halo player after all) instead of sneaking around and exploring everywhere before moving forward like i've been doing. I have to explore absolutely everywhere before i can bring myself to move on or i'll feel i've missed something like a weapon or item. If i choose one way to go, i'll get to the end of the level and trun around and go the other way to see what i missed.

He's completed it and i haven't, so i can understand how people can say it's short and have little gameing time. If you take your time and play it as you're supposed to (i'm not saying explore everywhere like me, just try and not to alert the guards by sneaking and using the camo/threat ring etc), then you wont feel the gameplay and cutscene is unbalanced.

Obviously, you can still do it pretty quickly by just tranquilising everybody, but it's much more fun using the variety of different methods/weapons/cqc/techniques implemented by the developers.

If you're just gonna shoot everyone and run on then you may as well just play halo or something, then you wouldn't have to moan about long cut-scenes

I guess it's just what you make of it. Being a long-term fan + Exploring and trying all implemented features is going to bring out the best of the game and fun.

Running and gunning isn't how you get the best out of a game like MGS. For Carocat, starting MGS with MGS4 is borderline stupidity. = ]

Watching it doesn't neccessarily mean you're not enjoying it and cut scenes have always been a large part of MGS - it's what distinguished it as a masterpiece of story telling on the PSX from anything else.

Thanks, mate! Knew I could count on you..

I've ordered the MGS essentials pack and a NTSC Ps2, so I'll be starting from scratch.

I know that - I'm just a fan of more immersive storytelling. Nothing quite says 'HEY, YOU ARE PLAYING A GAME' than having control taken away from you and a story scene kicking in.

Act 2 is pretty dull, and the first part of Act 3 is pointlessly long. Act 4 though... wow. Anyone who played MGS1 back in the nineties and DIDN'T feel horribly emotional when the heliport came into view is made of stone, AIDS and fail.
