GRID Community update – 8/5/08

The GRID demo is out NOW on XBL!!!! - Enjoy

The demo has 3 events to compete in. The eBay Motors Muscle Cup sees you taking the wheel of a ford Mustang GT-R and the streets of San Francisco, the Advan International Trophy hands you a Nissan S15 Silvia and your playground is Yokohama Docks, and the Euro Touring Car Series provides some old-school tin-top thrills with a BMW 320si touring car and the sweeping curves and hairpins of Jarama.

You’ll also have the opportunity to use the console versions of the demo to win an amazing prize. More details when the demo comes out. As we post this, we’re in the middle of the first GRID community day, where we’ve invited lots of folks from all over the UK to come visit Codemasters HQ and have a play of the game. You’ll get a more lengthy report on the day next week!

This week, we uploaded the “Le Mans Consultants” Video (available in the Downloads section). While portions of it were being filmed, we grabbed Le Mans Racer Stuart Hall for a quick chat. Check it out over the page.

i thought this was supposed to be realistic  it feels arcadey, ice even turned the assists off, i'll play it a bit more later but i had my hopes pinned on a new forza:( one thing i did like though was the speed of the game, even when your in the middle off a school of cars and doin 100/120 the visuals are solid its like watching a 100hz tele!

Wow, that was not what I was expecting.

The handling feels very unique. A sort of hybrid between Forza 2 and Mario Kart. It's like PGR on cocaine, but with damage and cars that can turn on a sixpence. It reminds me a lot of F-Zero X. 20 (!) cars, all going at insane speeds, bumping into each other like there's no tomorrow. Brilliant fun, and it can be very frustrating to have your steering rack knocked out of place.

The track is unforgiving, and although the cars are bloody easy to handle, it is a challenge to keep all four wheels on the tarmac, particularly going into a corner.

It's a definite buy for me, if only to hear the crazy yank say "GREAT DRIVING DANIEL" again.

For me its a cross between an arcade racer such as ridge with a bit of mario karts turning in now and again for good measure, then a little bit of realism thrown in, for me its a bad mix, everything feels too twitchy and also does not look anywhere near as good as GT.

Definitely not one to get me back into racing games.

quickshot89
08-05-2008, 11:29 PM
tried the drift race, its bloody hard to get it right, you take your finger off the acc and turn the handbrake on, turn for the drift, and you just spin out of control, or at least i am 9/10 times

Dont e-brake. Scandanavian flick it. If you know what that is. Turn away from the corner then into it then opposite lock. Should just cruise around it :p

Are you guys using manual or automatic? Is there any benefit in speed using manual on GRID?

Overall I'm very impressed with the demo...the game looks superb and the gameplay is fun. Sure its not realistic as in terms of a simulator but ask yourself is the game meant to be...do you really want to play another version of Forza2 which failed to be a "popular" title largely due to the fact that it is too realistic and in depth?

DinnyHoon
09-05-2008, 01:46 AM
I thought Forza 2 fell because of its disastrous menu system and glitch-filled online?

KONSPIRACY
09-05-2008, 01:59 AM
I'm sure there are plenty of reasons why ppl dont play it, and similarly why ppl do actually love Forza2...but for me it was simply down to the fact that you cant really just pick up and play unless you play stock cars. Not to mention I'm probably still mentally scared from having my garage corrupted on Forza1.

Anyways, GRID looks fantastic and can wait for full release!

jigglybean
09-05-2008, 05:53 AM
GRID is all about the race. We avoided adding tuning etc to enable it to be a 'pick up and play' game - which it does very well. The menus also have been very well planned and looked great.

One of the most interesting things for us when we attended XL4, was seeing some of you guys adjust your driving style after playing such games like Forza and PGR where damage didnt actually matter. Great to watch!

Gaskin
09-05-2008, 12:50 PM
No, he said you can go round corners at 150. It's not as realistic as Forza, and Forza you can't bounce off walls, that's PGR. This game is still good regardless.

Gaskin
09-05-2008, 01:54 PM
Why does driving like a real driving game and using Manual transmission become a disadvantage on this game? It seems if you take corners stupidly and unrealistically you go faster. I'm going to change to AT now too, as Manual gearing seemed to be a disadvantage for some stupid reason.

Hi jiggly a few questions...in the full version will i be able to qualify for my start position online & offline?...will you be able to take collisions OFF online "ghost cars" because i had a few races and it's all most impossible to overtake due to the bad camera angle when you go into the very front camera view 'it would be brill if you could rotate the camera all around the car instead of just being able to look to your left & right'?.1 more question can you do full 24hr races online & can you have teams like the real lemanz?.Iwill look forward to your answers thanks

Codemasters have the F1 licence now? I don't know whether that's good or bad news. I love Studio Liverpool's work with the series, as well as Wipeout. However, I'd much rather see an F1 game given to Codemasters than the likes of EA and Activision.

Gaskin, I agree with you. I started off racing like it should be done in real life, and was consistently getting poor times. Started to race like an idiot, flooring it through corners, and beat the record time. What really drilled it in to me was watching the ghost of the world record - number of apex's hit = zero.

Gaskin
09-05-2008, 02:52 PM
I've managed to beat the time, just. With AT, and driving semi normal. I'm going have to be a PGR tard and do stupid things to do well it seems. Also it's weird how the Manual transmission doesn't increase speed at all, when you're changing gear a lot later it really should be faster than AT.

Terbinator

IcemanLeigh

Absolutely ridiculous. Driving sideways through a corner is not faster than taking it properly.. There is no way that should be possible.

Agreed mate. I'm falling out with GRID tbh - it doesn't reward good driving, it rewards stupid things. By all means go for the adrenaline rush Codemasters, but make it plausible.

Also, I'm absolutely sick of the commentator guy saying my damn name every time he says something. Just say what you need to say, without saying 'Daniel' before it. It was cool to begin with, but even my bloody mother doesn't use my name that much.

jigglybean
09-05-2008, 03:54 PM
You have turned the driver aids off?

Renegade
09-05-2008, 03:59 PM
Yep. That's the main problem with it - times don't increase by turning them off and racing well, which they should. Turn them off on Forza and master them and the improvement in lap times is clear. Not so on GRID - it still pays to race like a loon, taking corners semi-sideways at 150.

jiggly bean the driver aids make no difference they just enable you to drift round the corners need for speed style even more easier:confused: . form the start line your proppeled into 4th gear and 80mph in about 2 seconds, the handling does need sorting out other wise online races are going to be ruined (aswell as offline) by people thinking the games PGR:mad:
(and steaming into an apex) which at the moment it is with a sepia filter attached. will this information be relayed on, i dont know but i find it most probably won't due to nearing release date, if these issues were sorted out there's proabbly a solid racer underneath but obviously its not just me who feels this way:p

Gaskin
09-05-2008, 11:06 PM
It's good for people who like racing games where you don't have to drive well. Better drivers would lose to **** kids, seriously. I struggled to beat that WR with manual transmission and taking corners close to perfect, it was pathetic. I thought this game looked promising when I played it at XL, but I have been disappointed. :(

KONSPIRACY
09-05-2008, 11:17 PM
Sorry but thats a stupid statement...if you lose to someone on GRID then that means they are better than you on the game. If you beat them at Forza2 then that means you are better than them on Forza2, and likewise with PGR4.

GRID isnt a simulator and doesnt pretend to be so, and as such you as a player need to adjust your gameplay to get the best results out of the game. That doesnt make the game bad...it makes you bad at the game.

Also a reminder that this is a demo...as far as demos go, its one of the best I've played so far. The full game will obviously provide more longevity but if you dont like the gameplay then its unlikely to float your boat on release...thats the whole point of releasing "demos" ;)

Gaskin
09-05-2008, 11:23 PM
A racing game which has proper tracks, with proper cars, should mean driving properly is rewarded, not stupidly. Drifting around a corner sideways rewards a faster corner, whereas hitting the apex does not. It's not being bad at the game, it's the game punishing you for having common sense. Sorry to say this Chris but I'm fairly certain several others will agree with me here.

DinnyHoon
09-05-2008, 11:44 PM
I agree with Gaskin. This game is incredibly fun, and I'm definitely buying it, but even Mario Kart rewards hitting the apex (to a small extent, admittedly). The supremo-fast drifting in GRID reminds me of Ridge Racer, and while Ridge Racer was bloody brilliant in its time, it doesn't have a patch on any of today's racers. Developers in this day and age should definitely be looking at some degree of realism in every game they make, no matter how loony.

That said, the AI is bloody brilliant at times. The AI cars react to my presence in the same way they do in nearly every game (they don't), but if you ever feel like a show, hang back behind a crowd of cars and watch them scrap for the racing line.

KONSPIRACY
10-05-2008, 01:14 AM
Well that explains why I cant quite break the WR time then as I always drive to the racing line and apex rather than using drift. I'll have to put that to the test and if your right then I agree its stupid in terms of driving reality, but if its how that game plays and the idea behind the game is to reward drift then thats the way you need to drive.

Renegade
10-05-2008, 09:39 AM
That's how I broke the WR Kon - drift every corner, the only corner you should be braking for is the first one - every single other corner gets a faster time by not braking.

I do like the adrenaline rush it provides, but I can't shake the feeling that it doesn't feel right to be racing the way I am and getting good times. In terms of a racing game it's one step away from having power-ups. It's not a bad game, it's just weird...

They really need to make the apex's higher, on the demo you can just drive over them. They should be braking your suspension.

Fair enough I suppose. To me this is everything I don't want in a racing game. In the same way you wouldn't want to be rewarded in an fps for missing shots, and penalised for hitting someone perfectly in the head. If I hit an apex perfectly at the fastest speed possible and get penalised for not taking the outside line around the corner sideways which apparently in some ridiculous universe is faster, I just want to punch someone in the face. Was looking forward to this game, but I am sorry to say it has gone down to a definite no now in its current state.

I did enjoy the demo, apart from the drift, man beating the rival's score is unpredicable, but the AI are tough and good for the europe race, but the usa one was a joke for me.

i'll be buying the full game when it comes, and the gaskin bros. comments about it has made me worry that doing the right racing technique not the stragety of the game.

If this does'nt get me back to racing games, then it's a big shame

I actually had a brief convo with Neo about this the other day...basically racing games died a few years ago simply because theres not much more than can be done with them without rehashing the same old formula over and over again.

Theres only so much that can be done with the graphics, and what would be the point in creating another version of Forza? Just may be GRID will actually inject some much needed life into what is increasingly becoming a dead genre of games.

I've been playing the demo, and I played some of the XBL races, now a part from the ****ing idiots that insist on ramming you to pass you or just to piss you off, it's a reasonably fun game. I've learnt the Touring car track now, and more or less I'll win every race if I'm not taken out completely. It's fun, and I've had some decent races. But still, the only reason I'm winning is because I'm racing people who are trying to take a driving line, whereas I go full speed across the tar mack and it turns the corner for me. Silly.

More proof that this is an arcade racer in sheep's clothing (oh, you know what I mean). 50-100 cars != simulation-type game.

do you mean in a good way or bad.

on another note, theres an article on ign http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/875/875155p1.html
this showcases the 'best' cars in each type of vehicle class, there seems to be multple car classes (12) which could mean very few cars to pick from for each class:(

Codemasters have the F1 licence now? I don't know whether that's good or bad news. I love Studio Liverpool's work with the series, as well as Wipeout. However, I'd much rather see an F1 game given to Codemasters than the likes of EA and Activision.

doesnt want much does he? the only thing im worried about is 1.) are codemasters going to make this an arcade style racer aswell (hopefully not) and 2.) they dont go in the same art direction as GRID, it feels like theyve applied a brown filter over the game, i think the F1 game on PS3 looks fine how it is.

Some of the ideas that guy put forward were a bit silly; but I like the safety car, formation lap, realistic damage, and red flag.
I think press conference and national anthems is maybe a little too far. I also think realism in overtaking, weather, and performance should be a given.
I'm an F1 nut, so I really hope they get this right. Realism is key here IMO.
Predicted 2009 release.

Is'nt it a little late now the demo contest is done?

and plus the leaderboards show some ridiculous times at top, some people found glitches already?
