I was quite surprised to hear from some people today that they weren't going to buy GTA IV, but I suppose there are some people that aren't looking forward to it.
So, are you going to buy GTA IV?

Yes.
There will be very few people who won't buy GTA on launch, those who don't will give in to the pressure after a few hours :D.
Is that offer from Game still on for a pre-order?
I think I'm going to order it tonight.

Definite purchase for me. Cannot wait, trying not to think about it since it still isnt here yet. My housemate has preordered it so depending on how much he is working that week I may not need to purchase it straight away.. Bargain.
On a seperate yet related note, my local GAME are now hiring new staff specifically for the release week of IV because half of their current staff are claiming or trying to cliam their 'holiday'. Thought that was funny

The poll should read:
Yes, it's already preordered.
Yes, but I didn't preorder it.
Maybe at some point, but not on release.
No, I am criminally insane and I like to yell at traffic.
I pre-ordered my copy at the end of last month, and I'm counting down the days :D

Just pre-ordered it. Of course, just as University was about to start a little after Halo 3 was released, GTA IV releases two weeks before my biggest exam of the year.

Yeah, I'm just stating I have an exam two weeks from release. Whether or not I study for the exam or play GTA is going to be one of those epic good versus evil battles. :p

I have already pre-ordered from HMV, not the best offer in the world and this wasnt because i got it from here but they are doing £130 off of vouchers when you pre-order, so anyone looking to buy a new games console should think about this as they do have some good deals. This is going to be a great game. Not as good visuals as other semi sandbox games such as Assassins creed, but this is GTA!! Who needs spanking visuals when you can go on a rampage with a rocket launcher and a shotgun :D.
Going to be a great game, I do hope that the online system will be good. Should be a good laugh with mates.

Do many of you actually care about the multiplayer?
I mean it's a nice add on, but I really wouldn't have missed it if they wouldn't have put it in..
Oh and Socialclub is open now: http://www.rockstargames.com/socialclub/

To be honest i hope this isn't like Halo 3
Lots of people have high expectations and then just get let down by them.
I'm looking forward to the online play but i think it might be abit laggy with a city that size and 16 players.

Well, Halo 3's single-player was a let-down; I don't see how any sane individual can say the multiplayer aspect let anyone down except those unwilling to let go of the good 'auld days'. Halo 3's single-player was incredibly short, and it definitely felt rushed and tacked on - apart from the brilliant second act.
Grand Theft Auto is first and foremost a single-player game. I've had high-expectations for Vice City and San Andreas, and save for disappointments in the map-size in the former and ghetto theme in the latter, they both lived up to those expectations and then went all Brando and asked "What have you got?".
I'd like to see a saved film option such as Halo 3 has, but that's probably one of the few disappointments I'll have with this game.

thats quite alpha male sending your wide lol. im going to a midnight launch at the local blockbuster, if they run out of standard edition il just av to go game in the morning and get the collectors version and get sum game points on my card!
I've gotta say, I don't like the look fo the main character at all. He looks boring, not cool or hard, looks more like a random guy in the street they picked for the game.
At least with the old ghetto theme the characters were interesting.

I think the reason Niko doesn't seem to fit in with the typical batshit-crazy GTA protagonist is that he's supposed to be a normal bloke surrounded by nutters (a bit like Claude in GTAIII). A lot of attention has been put on the NPCs, and there are a lot of hard life/death choices to be made in the story. So maybe Rockstar wanted a rather plain character so that the player could sympathise with him, as he's dragged down into a life of crime by his peers. It makes for more immersive gameplay. Look at BioShock and Half-Life.
Then again, he might be a passive nutter.

Something about Metal Gear Solid and the character of Raiden that could be applied to R* decision on Niko as the main character. Not my own words, just copied and pasted from something that details the whole of the MGS story and backgrounds.
Raiden spents most of the story as we see it as a sort of blank slate;
'programmed' but not experienced, he adds a sort of 'tabula rasa'
characteristic to the MGS story that does not appear anywhere else. This
apparent lack of depth, whether or not we like to admit, makes him
frighteningly relateable to the player; he is HIMSELF a 'player' in a
'video game' as he sees it, and he has nothing of 'real life' to offer to
his situation.
While at this point in the mythos, Solid Snake is a certifiable badass,
Raiden is the blank character that we can still find ourselves in the
shoes of. To play as Snake at this point would disintegrate the story;
MGS is first and foremost an interactive experience. Snake would be less
'playing' and more 'suggesting,' as the force of his character and
decisions would overwhelm the player, leaving him less a participant and
more a spectator. Raiden's sheer lack of personality, though somewhat
pathetic, helps define the gameplay and experience. As a player we
control Raiden and we are Raiden, unraveling his situation despite our
own weaknesses.
It goes on to say that he is influenced by the stronger characters around him and they in turn create his own character, and the player has more influence in the creation of this character.

Exactly. Raiden was a complete pussy, but I definitely enjoyed playing as him an awful lot, and I do admit I did start to actually care when he was getting pummelled by bullets, or nearly drowning whilst saving Emma. I bet GTAIV is going to feel the same, only without the girly-man with long white hair.

Don't see the analogy. Niko, first of all, is not a blank character: he has a thick Russian/East-European accent, and is very much just 'off the boat' (judging from preview vids, mind).
The spiel about Raiden is just a fancy way to say, "the player identifies with the character he is controlling" - well, duh.
