The new game, planned for a June 2008 release, will place virtual rockers into the shoes of Aerosmith guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford and bassist Tom Hamilton. Sadly Steven Tyler and Joey Kramer will not take up the axes. The game will apparently put players on the same track as Aerosmith's career, going from small club shows all the way up to rock legends. So, basically, the same "story" as all the other Guitar Hero games, but with a more recognizable face on it.

Aerosmith leader Steven Tyler, humble guy that he is, took the opportunity to explain why they were chosen as the first band to receive a full Guitar Hero game all to themselves:

"Any band that can go from 'Don't Want to Miss A Thing' (Aerosmith's #1 smash hit) to the ass-kicking 'Sweet Emotion' to the cheekiness of 'Love in an Elevator,' to the classic ballad 'Dream On' shows why Activision chose us to headline this game based on the diversity of the Aerosmith catalog. Not only is songwriting a b*tch, but then it goes and has puppies."
Yes, Tyler just called his own band's song "Aerosmith's #1 smash hit." And yes, we have no idea what that last sentence means either.

To celebrate the announcement, Activision has revealed that Guitar Hero III owners will be able to download Aerosmith's "Dream On" for the game starting tomorrow, February 16 until Monday, February 18. Activision's press release was unclear as to whether or not the song would be removed completely on Monday or would be turned into a paid download, but until then it should be up on both Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Store.

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith will be available this June for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and Wii. Guitar Hero III developer Neversoft will be working on the PS3 and 360 versions, while the Wii version is being worked on by Vicarious Visions (who did the Wii port for GH3), and the PS2 version is being created by Budcat Creations

And that is why Guitar Hero died with number 3. I don't understand why Activision would base a major franchise around one entity - anyone that can't stand Aerosmith won't buy it.

Atleast with number 3 a variety of songs but it does need ACDC

It sounds awful for people that aren't Aerosmith fans. I would love a GH game based on pre-American Idiot Green Day, but sales and population would tumble, simply because they make the game even more niche.

I won't pay £45 for a game based on a band I don't like. The strong point of Guitar Hero is the diversity - if there was a song or two that you didn't like, there were another 40 that were great. However now, there isn't.

This wont really help build on the success and fan base that GH has built up tbh, bad move imo.

Not to sound like a n0b, but i think that the story is the Aerosmith part. I am almost definatly sure, that there are others for extra-play and Online.

The story is based on the glory of Aerosmith playing in crappy clubs, to being rockstars and playing on stages with millions watching.

Does the story in a GH game actually matter? Isn't that a bit like having a tetris game with a story?

The games story mode is set around the career of the band, but there is other songs to play that the band have chosen from around the time and tracks that inspired them to the create the music they have. So all in all i think people will be surprised at the tracks available to play, i'm just chuffed 'Dream On' has been released for free since it's my favorite aerosmith tune.

There is a story to Tetris. You're building a rocket for the Soviet Union, to beat America to the moon. When you get 999,999 points, it takes off.

Seriously!
