Anyone watch this last night? I'm hooked already as it pretty much sums up how my mates at work view me. Link to what it is: http://www.channel4.com/entertainment/tv/microsites/B/bigbangtheory/

Basically its a group of geeks trying to do things like score with girls, highly recommended (Y)

Wow, it's me!

Just watched episode 1, and thanks to a tip from QS (see above), I'm downloading the rest of the first series now. It's a tpyical 21C US sitcom (they spit them out every 5 seconds over there), with OTT canned laughter and 2D characters. Nevertheless, I find the geeky element (and the fact that I understand almost everything they say) fun to watch, and I'd recommended it to any self-confessed nerd.

So was Friends, but that was still canned like a shelf in Tesco.

IcemanLeigh

Exactly. They do the filming infront of a live audience but before the episode is released they manipulate all of the crowd noises and laughter to their liking, usually completely replacing it with a different laughter track. (This is just a general statment by the way, not directly related to this series since I havn't seen it)

DinnyHoon
15-02-2008, 08:09 PM
Yeah, when they do 6-7 takes of a certain scene, I imagine the audience laughs quite a bit less on the 7th take than they did on the first.

Doubt it, they'll get paid.

I'd laugh at something that wasnt funny for money

Renegade

Audiences rarely get paid, they are usually invites or they buy tickets from the studio. I know that's how Friends worked.

Just watched the first in the series. Found it highly enjoyable. Great tip, definitely going to keep on watching this, best new comedy i've seen in a while. If it really does get better as it goes on then I am set for a few hours or so..

Edit: Just watching the start of the next episode reminded me.. I really like the theme tune. Probably too much for a ten second music clip but still..

First episode is ok but like Dinny (I think it was him) said it gets better as it goes on and if you're a nerd you can relate to quite alot of stuff in it, which is quite scary.

I've watched the whole first series now. I just love it :D

Large quote below, not exactly a spoiler:
*the four guys are playing Halo 3, yelling at each other in typical 4v4 style*
*four girls enter*
"Hey guys, we all decided we were bored of dancing, and came back to have sex with you."
*the guys don't even notice*
*the girls leave, mildly amused*
*about 20 seconds pass*
*one guy pauses*
"Wait, I thought I heard.... something."

The theme tune's pretty damn catchy too :p

IcemanLeigh
18-02-2008, 10:16 AM
Theme tune is by the Barenaked ladies and is called the History of Everything. Apparently when performaing it on there more recent perfromances they can only remember the words of the theme tune to this show and no more.

One of the best scenes in the series by far has to be when Christy comes to stay with Penny so Penny has to sleep at Leonard and Sheldon's apartment. Penny and Sheldon have a big argument over which end of the sofa she should sleep on, everyone goes to bed and Raj is just standing in the kitchen eating sandwich lmao :D

Allright, it's definitely picking up, but I'm still not all convinced [Ep 5/8 now]. The Hawking impression was good though. I like the theme tune as well.

But the main characters don't really do it for me, I don't think they work too well together

DinnyHoon

It was to do with the writers' strike. Episode 9 airs on the 10th of March, and continues the 22-episode series :)

Pirate Balloon
23-02-2008, 09:54 PM
I watched this the other day and was suprised. It was a lot better than i thought it would be, but it suffers the same problems most American sitcoms do. The lack of subtle jokes and references, depth and character development mean it has zero re-watchability for me. As Renegade said, the jokes are predictable. The leading-line, response-line, laughtrack dialogue is starting to annoy me so i dunno if i can make it through the entire series.

I do enjoy it, but i do find it rather annoying when Raj doesn't say anything funny, and there's still a laugh-track played. Makes you wonder if they thought the accent would make him funny rather than his lines, which is disheartening.

DinnyHoon
23-02-2008, 09:58 PM
I don't think the series uses a laughter track. My guess is that the audience are paid/retarded, both of which are very possible in the US.

carocat
23-02-2008, 10:03 PM
I actually found the laughing very distracting. Apparently it's an audience, but they must've been hyper and on drugs.

It's nothing compared to the laughter on say Frasier which I don't mind.

The fake/forced laugh does annoy me but after 5mins i don't even notice it.

I must agree with the American Comedy arguement as i honestly believe that American Sitcoms are incapable of reaching a 'hilarious' state.

Fraiser is the only Sitcom of the past 10 or 15 years which i can truly class as Hilarious, Friends is great but it did grow to be predictable.

I think there are a few more that are great:

Scrubs is great [only seen it up to the Musical ep though], Sex and the City [fair enough, it's more of a women's thing], Arrested Development, Weeds, Spin City was good [or at least some seasons as I don't think I saw them all]..

But then again some don't class those as sitcoms as they have different camera setups and more feature evolving characters rather than set sets.

DinnyHoon
24-02-2008, 01:14 AM

Don't watch another episode past that, it all goes horribly downhill.

I love Scrubs, it's probably my favourite American programme. If you've never seen it, watch 3x14 - My Screw Up or 5x21 - My Lunch, great examples of what makes up each episode.

carocat
24-02-2008, 01:24 AM
I'm currently downloading S1-6, should be done tomorrow. I've heard it went downhill from S5-ish onwards, but considering how amazing the first four series are I can endure some bad ones. Scrubs really is the only recent comedy that made me LOL.

314 is amazing, did not see that coming.

I like the ones told by others, especially the one where JD is stuck in the water tower or

The sort of double one with the transplant patients and the ones with the old lady show how great Scrubs combines drama [yes, I was crying] and comedy.

I never liked two and a half men, guess that's because I never liked the main actors.

Seinfeld is the greatest American comedy. Curb your Enthusiasm is a close second though. If you know your stuff, you should know why.

Larry David is a genius in both writing and acting, put it that way. I just find the characters more identifiable in Curb, that's all. I enjoy the fact that it's 99% improv too.

You do know that Larry David along with Jerry Seinfeld was behind Seinfeld too? Hence, "If you know your stuff, you should know why.". And George is a better representation of Larry David, than Larry David is.

I know who wrote Seinfeld. As I've said, the characters in Curb just relate to me a little more, and the situations they are in are identifiable - not just the characters personalities. Also, Seinfeld wasn't improvised. Curb is, and I love the way it's done.

It's subjective - IMO Curb is better than Seinfeld.
