Anyone been watching his documentries?
I watched the Gangs series and thought it was great. And Afghanistan is even better IMO, really makes it hit home what war is about. I think its well directed, and that he is a great presenter.
It has a huge impact I think, does anyone know what other projects are being filmed/going to be filmed?

Gangs was great, but I refuse to watch Afghanistan. He's sat there behind a wall, watching soldiers fight for their lives, and he's the one getting payed by the bucketload for it.

Thats true. The BBC spent millions insuring his life before he went out there. But I don't refuse to watch it, because that is what is really happening, its life and I think the general public need to realise that.

What the hell, the guy went to afgan as a journalist, not a soldier. to document life on the front line, regardless of how much he got paid.

And he did risk his life. No matter if he hid behind a wall or not, it was the fact that he went. And brought the real truth back to viewers at home

Yea but he is gettin payed loads as for them soldiers they get pittance my Dad is in the RAF
He is going to Basra for 4 months soon and he doesnt get paid that much we can hardly afford a house that how bad it is.
Those soldiers are just the same, Pittance ****ing ridiculous and terrible no wonder no-one wants to join the armed forces unless you heart is well and truly in it

Otherwise go for the better jobs like IT consultant or even a Store manager at Mcdonalds as they get more than them soldiers out there

I know loads of people that get paid lots, you just have to work your way up, like every job.

The RAF provide service men/women and family with houses. Not to mention they probably put your dad through collage

The officers that are not in the war get paid loads
Only cause they are officers or wing commanders
out there as a private, corporal or sergeant you get nothing you get pittance as i said
Its not about them snob faced officers that all they do is tell where them men are going and where they are going to risk their lives
Yea a skilled job give them that but shouldn't deserve the pay that it gets compared to them risking thier lives

What I found interesting is when he interviewed the soldiers, they all said that they are not fighting for England, not fighting for the freedom of the Afghans or anything like that, they are fighting for each other, looking out for their mates etc.

Yea that is interesting but if you think about it
All them men have gone through training together and being side by side at all times and when the regiment gets sent out. Your main goal is keep your friends alive.
I don't have personal experience of this but having Family members in RAF, Army, And Canadian Army i Do get the story's and backgrounds

I'm sorry but my uncle and father were 2nd lieutenants who fought on the frontlines in Iraq, Bosnia and Northern Ireland, any rank from private to captain fight on the frontlines. it's not until you reeach the rank of brigadier that you stay at HQ, do not call officers snobs.

Officers are though, Most haven't came through the ranks either most got A-levels and straight in as a Officer. Captains are Ment to fight on Frontlines. But not many do.
Mainly stay at the back Some do run forward the hard fought people that have come through the ranks do run forward with the men but only a few. My uncle is a captain that has came through the ranks in his last year not though. But he is still there and he fights. He is in Afghanistan now coming back in 2 months time and never going out.

my cousin just finished his tour of iraq and is going to afghanistan in about 8 months, and i agree with you, lower ranks don't get paid enough.

p.s. how long has your uncle been in the army, if he's a captain, I'm guessing about 15 years

About 18 i think but he really wants to come out. He was commited at first but He told me its just too much seeing friends fall around you 'if you know what i mean'.
I think this tour he has lost 2 men and he hates it now.
He told me that seeing your friends in that state really does put people off you have to have a strong heart and head to stay in the army.

well when my uncle was in bosnia, during his leave he had 5 friends stay at his mums house. by the time they had had there leave gone back and done another six weeks, 3 of them were killed.

(this is my uncle andrew, who reached corporal in a couple of years and never got his sergeant, and not my uncle anthony, who finished as a major after working his way up the ranks)

Just watched the whole series of Afghanistan - absolutely superb.

It's extremely emotional and harrowing seeing what these soldiers do on a daily basis - before now I never even realised what happens in a modern day warzone, but this series really opened my eyes.

Fantastic.

Did they only point the lens at British soldiers, or did they take a look at those that they're fighting?

I haven't seen the series but from what i have heard that was not the point of it Neo. Surely it is to give the British public an idea of how soldiers in a war zone live.

I'm asking did they show what it is like on the other side of the fight; so, please, don't interject with your one-sided view of life and war.

There were interviews and filming of Afghan citizens, but there wasn't any filming of the Taliban... for fairly obvious reasons. The point wasn't to support or to criticise the war, it was to give an idea of how modern day soldiers live, and to put an end to the whole 'electronic war' theory that a lot of people seem to have.

Predictions for his next documentry?
Assuming that he does another, which I would think is very likely.
