Music is very important in games. It adds to the depths and adds to the immersion. Looking at KOTOR for example where every planet/area has a different score or Fable where it's possible to tell where you are by listening to the music.
The project director posted the following on the IGN (http://blogs.ign.com/BioWare_Games/2007/01/26/44772/) blog about the score on Mass Effect:

I detest playing games in single mode, and when i do i dont take much attention to the story line, like GOW, or even halo. So the music doesnt effect my personal gaming needs. However it does play a very important, the music in GRAW, was very impact full, listening to Hendrix s as you landed in a dirt ridden Mexico, was very atmospheric.
And like you said in another thread the Just Cause music is pretty cool, because it adds that atmosphere, and extra feeling to the fact you were on a sunny island in the Caribbean.
Music is hugely important in games, and something I actually enjoy rather more than I perhaps should, as can be attested to by the number of soundtracks I have in my music library :p
I think the best game soundtrack is the Hitman Blood Money soundtrack, closely followed by the Okami soundtrack.

It's very important to me, I listen to a lot of game music outside of the game.
I took mp3's of halo's battle themes along with the likes of 'Reached the limit' 'Eye of the tiger' 'pulp fiction theme' to help get me in the mood when I go into a shooting frenzy online.
When the assholes appear... on goes Beethoven / Mozart to keep me from exploding into a rage that harms my skill.
Music to me makes game feel like art, custom music can effect my mood when playing online and truely enhances the games experience.
