While browsing through i found a few openings at Free Radical (http://www.freeradicaldesign.co.uk/recruitment.php) , who are they? Well according to them "Free Radical is leading the development industry by recognising the hard work of it's staff with a unique system of paid over-time. We have a long history of originality and creativity with internally developed product."

They seem to be based in the Nottingham area of the UK and even have a relocation plan for new starters. List of jobs that are available:

Art

* Environment Artists
* 3D Character Artists (http://www.freeradicaldesign.co.uk/recruitment.php)

Code:

* Tools Programmers
* Graphics/Rendering Programmers
* Senior AI/Gameplay Programmers

Free radical are the splinter group from Rareware studios formerly owned by nintendo and now owned by MS.

Responsible for Donkey kong country, killer instinct, diddy kong racing, banjo, 007 goldeneye etc.

On their own they are making the half hyped game "haze" for the PS3. My advice for anyone wanting to work in the games industry is to look in the back of EDGE magazine et al as they are the upper crust publications for the gaming industry and typically have lots of vacancies across the board for developers and artists.

On a uni open day the other day i was told that it's actually really hard to get a job in the games industry, and most people with a games devopment degree end up getting jobs in a different (although similar) field.

That sounds pretty reasonable to me but can anybody tell me how accuate that is?

The games industry is one of the hardest industries to get into. Go onto any site that advertises gaming jobs and you'll see that all of them require at least 1 1/2 years experience. It's the endless circle: To get a job you need experience, to get experience you need a job...

Easiest way to gain experience for the industry is by starting via testing, QA and then work your way up.

Well most of the requirements are stuff that you do in the other computer science courses, and the bonus with that is that if you cant get into the games industry you can go elsewhere with the degree fairly easily.

Although if you have a games development degree and you dont get into the games industry... i dont think many other employers are gonna be too impressed with that haha

The most lucrative field of computing is programming; so, a degree in that will cover you.
