I'll let Cormac reply, and then split this into a new topic... I don't think this one should get bogged down.

Foolish questions.

It plays fine. Only lag I've noticed is during replays.

Matchmaking is the same.

The maps are rubbish.

Am I the only player on Halo who intentionally tries not to die? Why do my random team mates generally suck balls?

People always seemed content to die on halo just so long as they got a kill themselves, never understood it personally.

The maps are rubbish.

How can you say that, all of the maps are quality with a remake of Zanibar and another map like Lockout. Also you don't get minus a kill for team killing which is good.(No more derankers)

Best I've went is 30 for 6 in team slayer or 40 kills in BTB.

The maps are nothing special. Im dissapointed that there is only really one remake of a map which is zanzibar. I suppose we will get them as D/L content though.

Edit: Am i the only one who thinks the loading times for maps is quite long, espically when setting a custom game up?

Yes it does take long compared to Halo 2. Also shotty snipers is included too much in Team Slayer.

So what is wrong with the maps? Weapon placement? Layout? Anyone care to elaborate rather than just "they're pants"?

FiveOhOne
25-09-2007, 11:42 AM
If there's a Zanzibar remake I'm happy, being that I already know Valhalla is a Blood Gulch remake.. the rest can't be *that* bad can they? As long as there's nothing like bloody Waterworks..

Its each to their own though when it comes to which maps you prefer, so I will reserve judgement till I get back at 6, I thought from alot of the flythroughs of the levels they were solid and held up much better than Halo2's offerings.

However like Moose said, the placement of things or the general layout of the map. Its a bit vague at the minute!

meh, how can you comment on a map's quality if you've only played it half a dozen times? the real quality of the map shines through when you realise that you're still not bored of it on the 500th time of playing it. the maps on teh beta seemd to have that mix of open / long range and enclosed / short range bits that typify the halo map selections of days gone by....

i say, elaborate on the "pants" statement, and then play with an open mind for a month. then pass judgement......

Well, I say the maps are rubbish because they just don't feel right. Having played on most of them a good few times they just don't have the same feeling to them as Halo 1/2 where they felt 'good' straightaway.

Long loading times? How long does it take for you?

kurosaki7
25-09-2007, 12:54 PM
Maps are not meant to feel 'good' straight away, webley said it perfectly, its finding out how to use the map over time and adjust to it. Whats the point in designing maps you can feel at home with right away?

I am pleased by that comment actually as I know on all the Unreal games (which has genius map design) that is the way it felt and kept me playing far longer than Halo1 or 2.

Don't see how anybody can say the maps are when you've only played them a few times. I've already played 50 + games and in a year or so I could see myself still playing and enjoying them . Zanibar and Guadian(sp?) are my favourite though.

Cormac

How can you say that,

Should end that with a question mark!

I can say it because it is my opinion and is based solely on my own experiences of the maps not yours or anybody elses. How can you ask such a retarded question?

The maps generally are far too small. Epitaph and Guardian are lame. Guardian is similar in layout to Lockout but its smaller for some reason. Narrows is a bridge on top of another bridge that is it. Fair enough I haven't played a lot of games and I haven't even played against other people on some of the maps but they just don't feel like I will enjoy them. First game on Narrows my team got spawn killed. The fact this can still happen is enough of a problem but the fact its happening before the actual release of the game is not a good sign. Isolation is one of the bigger maps at 10 players but its essentially a little circle with some corridors underneath it. I've always been a fan of objective games and larger maps and I just don't feel this game has enough of them.

I can say the maps are rubbish because I've played on them and because they felt a bit rubbish. How can you guys question that?

Corkin, your favourite maps are from Halo 2 does that not strike you as a bad omen?

Maps are not meant to feel 'good' straight away

Balls to that, any map I wasn't happy with on halo 2 immediately ended up being pretty much ignored by the rest of the community. You can't start a game on "relic" and think "Yeah this map's gonna get real deep in 4 months time".

If cormac tells me the maps are **** then I believe him, but then Bungie have always made **** maps, there have only ever been about 3-4 decent maps on Halo CE and Halo 2.

carocat

The maps are too simple in my opinion, there isn't as much imagination that went in them and some I got bored of quite quickly. Take for example the indoors map [The Pit?], that would be so much better if it had more to it, but the way it is, it's too open.

Guardian is just a crap Lockout and has some really ridiculous spawns.

Valhalla and Last Resort are good, but Last Resort is literally Zansibar with a couple extra walkways. Even the weapons spawn in exactly the same location.

Maps are not meant to feel 'good' straight away
Really? So that I get the feeling that something isn't right with them and me thinking that I don't feel like playing on a majority of them is ok then?

And Corkin: I've had about 150 games on Halo 3 and the maps haven't improved for me.

Cormac

Thanks for the support.

Maybe you guys like the maps, maybe Construct will be your new favourite (I doubt it), maybe I'll end up liking some of the maps I dislike now BUT you can't question my opinion. I feel like the maps are generally too small and too simple so who the **** are you to question that?

While I'm here, my major gripe with the beta was that every time you turned it on you had to set your voice settings to Team & Party or you'd hear the other team mouthing off. I assumed that this was a problem with the beta and would be corrected in the full game with system settings being saved. Some of them are but for some reason you still have to set your voice options every time you turn the game on. Yeah, they've made it easier to mute people but I shouldn't have to tell the game that I don't want to hear the other team every time I turn it on.

Big oversight and one that will piss me off every time.

Cormac: If you predominantly play with people on your FL and only want to hear them, set your voice settings in the Guide to 'Friends Only'. It's somewhere in your profile settings.

Cormac

Might give that a check later.

Last night about 2 minutes after a game of Territories began I heard one of my team mates ask, "Are we playing Territories?". Then another 5 minutes later the same guy asked, "Are we Red or Blue?". I felt like crying. Not only are the majority of people total **** at the game but the majority don't even know what they're doing when they're playing it.

If that is the standard of voice chat from my team mates I might just have to mute them all!

Edit: Oh the excitement! I had thought that Bungie.net had removed the game viewer from its stat pages but I've just found it again. I used to spend hours analysing my games on the game viewer. It was always good to watch the progress of a flag through the level and see who was doing what while it was being transported. Now I have the replay theatre and the game viewer. I'm not sure I'll be spending the majority of my time actually playing the game.

Indeed.

How amazing is the 360. got home last night, me and poke decided we would play split screen co-op, with fatboy on live, so we recovered pokes account and signed in, we could both hear fatboy through our mics, ( we had two mics) but couldnt hear each other through the mics.

O and by the way, how awesome is the campaign ! you were lying about how crap it is cormac. probably because of the co-op but still its there and it makes it excellent.

Cant say I'm impressed with the maps tbh but will obviously take a while to adjust and play them in MM before making a proper judgement, however having tested all maps for several hours yesterday at the launch yesterday my initial judgement is that they are poorly designed and forge will definitely be required.

Also you don't get minus a kill for team killing which is good.(No more derankers)

Theres an option for it in settings.

A graphical comparison from H1 to H2 to H3. They didn't use the best images for H1 and H2 though.

Is it just me who can see online tournaments (which are played on a neutral host) for Halo 3 being played in the Forge rather than a custom game. In forge the host just has to change into Guilty Spark and fly to the top of the map?

Bonzo - everyone else could go into Forge at the same time, and start giving themselves awesome weaponry or vehicles.

You can set it so only the party leader (the host) can go into editing mode.

on the maps subject: - had a couple of mp games last night on the pit and the narrows, and really liked both of them. they both seemed to have some decent "hotspots" and lots of places for ambushes. saying that though, my favourite maps in h2 were collosus, elongation and turf, which i know went against the majority opinion.....

my only real beef with the MP is having to use the cursor pad to talk.....

Gaskin
27-09-2007, 12:47 PM
That's only when there's 5+ players though Chet.

Chet Webley
27-09-2007, 03:33 PM
what, the hotspots, or the cursor-pad-talky-thing? the speech settings i've chosen are "team and party".....

.... hmm, must have a rummage around the control options.....

Gaskin
27-09-2007, 03:44 PM
The chat. You only have to press the directional pad to talk when there's 5 or more people, otherwise you simply speak. :)
