I have an xbox 360 and a PC in the same room. The pc is connected to the internet via a cat5 jack in the wall that runs to a router in another room. Im fairly new to networking; is their some way I could a use a sort of ethernet spliter to run a line from both my xbox and my pc through the same jack and into the router? I dont see why this couldnt work, but again im new to all of this. please help.

You can internet share your connection to your Xbox 360 with a twisted RJ45 cable, providing you have a spare port in your PC. Otherwise I don't see why the way you have mentioned above wouldn't work.

Welcome to the site by the way.

you have a network port in your room?

get a switch with 2 normal straight though cables, and your current cable, and connect everything up like that

All them options sound fine but might i ask if you are connecting your PC and 360 in 1 room to a Router in another, why can't you simply upgrade your route to one that has more free ports to allow for the PC and 360 to plug directly into it rather than sharing the same line.
