Short of it is the 60gig pack has been dropped by $100 and there is now a new factory unit 80 gig with motorstorm for the old price of the 60 gig. $599.
Retards eh?
Rumor has become truth this morning, as Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed that it will slashing the price of the 60GB PlayStation 3 model, while also introducing a new 80GB model in the US and Canada.
The 60GB version, previously priced at $599 US ($659 CND), has been lowered to $499 US ($549 CND) starting immediately. The 80GB SKU, already available in Korea, will ship on our side of the pond with MotorStorm packed in.
Sony also confirmed that it plans on shipping more than 120 new first and third-party games in North America throughout the holidays and fiscal year.
The new 80GB unit comes with MotorStorm in AND on the box.
"As we move into the next phase of PS3, it's important that we continue to evaluate our product line, offering consumers the technology and features that meet their growing needs for new forms of media and the way in which it is delivered," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO of SCEA. "The introduction of the 80GB PS3, the new pricing for the current 60GB model, the availability of more than 100 new software titles this fiscal year and, finally, the expansion of services for PlayStation Network, will provide even more options for users and will help bring new consumers into the PS3 fold."
Technologically, the 60GB and 80GB PlayStation 3s will be identical other than hard drive space. The 20GB model, has been discontinued in the US, as was reported earlier this year.

Absolutely awful idea. The 20gig was dropped from sale, and Sony could have made big news by dropping the 60gig to $100 and leaving it there. Now they release another $600 SKU and everyone thinks it's the superior version - which means the flagship PS3 model is still $600.

Yup exactly. It really makes you wonder how these companies end up so out of touch.
Did you know only the American PS3 has PS2 hardware emulation in it? The other regions do not?
Basically any PS2 game is guaranteed to work on a PS3 in the states - and backwards compatibility here is along the same rails as the 360. I mean who would have come up with that **** for brains idea, did they not see the PS2 sales outdoing the PS3 month after month?

Yeah, they took the emotion engine out of the PAL systems. That's a double edge though, because it reduced the hardware cost of each PS3 and therefore the loss on each PS3 sold was reduced significantly. I understand why they did that one. The new SKU though is beyond good reason.

Yeha but losing money is a moot point if it means you succeed in dominating the market again then recouping the losses, they are just heading into a flat out loss with this. The only thing happening at the moment is the 360 is doing crappy the ps3 even worse and the gimpy girl console is running off with the spoon. In fact this whole new gen thing is crap. We have 7 ****ing SKUs for 3 consoles, I think everyone was on crack.
Give it till October/November for the Wii sales to slow to a dribble, the 360 will pick up with the Fall line up of games and the PS3 will flounder and will be harder to defend as it's sales deficit to the 360 will be more pronounced with the Wii not leading the pack.

I think i'd take your prediction over any others - except will the Wii sales not drop? Plenty of mums and dads looking for the next thing to their ps2 and see the ps3 is now ?499 or whatever and the wii is what? ?179?

I would rather own a PS3 or a 360 than a Wii any day of the week. Not meaning to sound big headed but the price is irrelevant, I'll go where the games are. Right now it's the 360 by far and I'm loving it, if the PS3 picks up to a good pace I'll go out and get one, and at the moment there is absolutely zilch that interests me about the Wii.

Yeah the Wii sales will drop quite heavily, at the moment there is huge demand for it, give it a few months and the people who are going to be buying one will most likely have already done so leaving it with the trickle sales that the 360 is getting at the moment (compared to no sales of the PS3 :P)
Price might be a factor at Christmas time but to be honest it'll be the 360 vs the PS3 with the Wii picking up sales for the younger kids but they wont make up a significant portion of sales for the Christmas period, it'll be the teenagers' parents who will be picking up a grown up console.

Let us not forget that E3 is tomorrow, and Halo 3 is featuring heavily. A lot of people may be convinced that the 360 is the way to go. Also, we can't rule out talk about 360 prices, the question is going to be asked now Sony have sort of cut their price.

People have been saying this for months and still the Wii keeps selling - there are MANY parents here at work who are planning on buying a Wii for their kids. Add to that the fact that Nintendo seem to be able to produce a decent amount of consoles and I wouldn't be suprised if the Wii was number 1 seller over Xmas.

Which is disappointing - because it's useless in terms of decent games.

The 60GB PS3's already ?400 in places like Asda, so hopefully this US price drop/introduction of a (pointless) 80GB upgrade will put the base model down half a ton to 350.
Considering that my local indie store has had a preowned PS3 on it's shelf for the past month and a half priced at ?325 and it still aint shifted something tells me there is a long way that the PS3 needs to drop in price!

Made me laugh, our local Choices store had a big sign pre-launch saying 'we will only have 10 Playstation 3s in store on launch day! Reserve one now!' and a big chart which had the numbers 1-10 on it hung up behind the desk. Numbers 10 and 9 were crossed out (reserved) and the other 8 were still there three days after launch - at which point the chart was taken down.
