Ever since UKHMM / MB360 started the competitions have been blighted with people who don't turn up for events - it is immensely frustrating and undermines both the effort put in by the staff and also the people who bother to turn up.
So, what about this for an idea?
Every time you fail to turn up to an event where you haven't provided approriate notification that you can't make it you earn an "Infraction" - two / three infractions and you're banned from joining any MB360 comps for 6 months (personally I'd plump for forever but I'm an evil git).
The infraction period can run for one calendar year, at which point everyone gets a clean slate.
Not only will this hopefully stop people wasting time and signing up for events they have no intent to play in, but with a bit of DB / php magic the Events team will be able to look at an upcoming event and go
"Hmm, 25% of the people that are scheduled to play have been no-shows previously - there is a risk they could do it again. Lets make sure we get some reserves"
Thoughts?
It's a good idea, however I think part of the problem is that there is no notification of the event starting a few days before hand via email so the folk who come here soley for the comps often forget and hence the no-shows.

I accept that is part of the reason, but it's not just that - take last nights Worms fiasco for example. Two of the people I was meant to play against were online but were playing Halo 2. I sent them invites, they ignored it. Bang out of order.
As for the notification thing: It really shouldn't rely on emails to tell people when an event begins. This should be decided way before the event is even advertised as being open so when someone says "Yeah, I'm up for playing that" they know when it starts and when it ends. It's not that difficult.
(Sorry if I sound a bit short I'm just in a foul mood today!)

^^^ he's always a bit short, unless he's wearing nerys's platform shoes.....
put a time/date slot in the rules. publish the fixtures. if you can't make that, don't enter the comp. allow everybody 1 "no show", ban them from the comp after the second one.

We were thinking about using a yellow card/red card system. Obviously if people have good reasons then they'd be let off. I have been extremely disappointed with the turnout of worms and I'd hope the competition won't be remembered as "that one that Gaskin couldn't run properly" just because of some nitwits not turning up. We did send emails out that Worms was beginning, so there's no excuse for the first round. And there was dates in the rules section of when default game times were.

Emails go out for every competition n sometimes every round of the competition...however, most of the time I'd imagine they end up in junk mail or just not read at all. As events staff we all try our hardest to remind ppl about fixtures but we cant baby sit everyone and at the end of the day its the responsibility of the ppl who sign up in the first place. Even I forget sometimes that I'm suppose to be hosting a lobby (thanks to Toast for reminding me last night!), and its easy to understand why ladders are more popular than fixed date events.

But there were no dates when it was first announced - I'd like to see the banners say something like:
"Worms Championship
Incoming! Can your team wriggle their way to the MatchBox360 Worms Championship title?!
Starts 26-JUNE-2007"
or similar.

I took the educated decision of cancelling the Texas Hold'Em tournament for the very reasons of this thread, however it will be relaunched with a new registration and full details of dates/rules.

Yeah but the banner had already been made, and I made the dates after nobody on the staff team wanted to run Worms. So I did it after I had got rid of coursework/exams. But what's the point in entering a tournament if you're not going to read the rules. If you read the rules you see the dates.
6 months seems a bit harsh to me but I suppose if it's needed then yeah do it...
