Hey my brother has just tried to set up the messenger update but he's encountered a slight hitch. The e-mail account he used to link his GT to got hacked and therefore he doesn't use it anymore and does not know the password so he cant set up the messenger stuff. Can anyone help with this or will he have to relink his GT with the new e-mail address? And if so does this make him lose all his gamerscore, friends etc?

Major Nelson has just made a post about this on his blog
(some) Dashboard Messenger questions answered
Now that you have had a few hours to play with the new dashboard update, some folks have asked some questions about the new Messenger integration. Let me see if I can help clear a couple of things up:
Q: I don?t want to automatically sign in to Live Messenger on my console?how do I turn it off?
A: Sign in to Xbox LIVE, go to the Xbox LIVE blade, then select your gamercard and press A. Go down to ?Auto Sign-in? and press A. You can set your preference for Xbox Live and Windows Live Messenger separately here.
Q: The email address assigned to my Xbox LIVE account is different to the email address I use on my PC for Windows LIVE messenger. Is there a way for me to still access my messenger account?
A: Not at this time. We are working on the ability to allow users to change the email address they originally used when signing up for Xbox Live. The feature will be available in an upcoming release.
Post any other questions you may have and I will try to track down answers. Also, I am in meetings all day, so I will only be able to check in a few times today to see how things are going.

Has he tried phoning Xbox support? Bit of a no-brainer and it will be painfull but it appears many people are having this problem - they may help out in super-quick time!!

Aye, it's doing my ****ing head in too, everytime I get disconnected from Live it won't sign back in, I have to run "Xbox live connection" test and then it will sign me back in. Typical shitty M$ for you.

Now it's saying "Xbox Live Failed" is Live down now? Pile of ****.

Best way to screw up XBL n make your console freeze...install msn on your reliable system! Good idea in theory but clearly absolutely rubbish in practise. Wont ever be using the msn on the dashboard.
Any other features worth talkin about?

Was there any other features in the update which were noticeable?
It can't be that bad can it?Well it could be a hell of a lot worse, unfortunately my 360 is yet to brake after this update - unlike the last.
