... to work out what was not quite right about the new look.

Now, don't get me wrong - the new forum is *miles* better than vanilla but there is something that needs tweaking, and that's the post layout.

Look here to see what I mean: http://www.bluehoopedmoose.plus.com/temp/hmmm.jpg

Now, those big grey bits are not only a huge waste of space (in tao's instance it takes up about three times as much space as his post) but it also makes it really difficult to read threads, especially when you consider that the average post length here is a couple of words and a LOL

Seriously, can this be changed, and before everyone gets used to the new layout? I think it would be best to move the username and icon to the left, with post content immediately to the right. you know the layout i mean (if not, go check out kellysheros.co.uk)

ta muchly!

You're never happy. :P I do agree with you though, it seems to go hand in hand with Vb software which pisses a few people off, but it could have been like this...

of course i'm never happy - these slack mo' fo's would never get anything done if i was happy :D ;)

it can be changed (and hopefully will), so it's not inherent to Vb - pesfan has a perfect layout IMO.

I still think much would be solved by just limiting the size of an avatar.

I'm really annoyed with the 'standard' layout of vB, especially the way it is on PESfan, H3f and Kellys Heros.

But then you'd still have a waft of space - look at the screenie i posted. Duke has no avatar at all and the space wasted is still equivalent to his entire post.

Why annoyed? I think it works quite well. Oh, and kellys heros is not vB but phpbb :D

Just the space on the left, it annoys me. It takes up too much space, especially considering long usernames and yeah, I'm not making a very good argument here, I know. I just somehow annoys me.

Personally I'd like to see the sig and avatar sizes reduced a fair bit. I'd like to see Avatars reduced to 50 x 50px, and sigs reduced to something like 600 x 50px.

I'm sure there will be people who like their huge ass sigs, but personally I just don't see a point in wasting all that space. There are people going round with 110px tall sigs, which imo is just far too large.

I agree that the large bar just to house a username and avatar is a bit silly, and I don't see any reason why the "posted today, 11:00" and "quote/reply" etc can't be incorporated into that bar, rather than having it's own separate bar as well. And reducing avatar size to about 50px would help save some space there too.

Basically I'd like to see as little wasted vertical space as possible. Less work for my scrolling finger ftw :)

If your heart so desires there are options within your profile to disable signatures and avatars.

But good point none the less - for some reason some people seem to be able to get round the signature size restrictions.

Yeah, a 50x50 avatar seems large enough.
( I know mine is bigger than that! I don't mind changing it! )

And if the "Posted at", "Report", "Quote" and "Reply" could be moved into the grey strip, as Backflip suggested, it'd make much better use of the space.

Oh and I can't stand huge signatures either.
Mine is only 14 pixels high! That's plenty! :-D

I raised this issue before the new forums went active, but was abrubtly told...

Post times, its one sodding line, get over it! :P

I dont like quoting myself but here goes...
I guarantee it will be raised as an issue when these go public. It is really unnecessary space n just by looking at this thread you can quite clearly see that it makes the place look messy...same goes for the non-standardised avatar sizes.

Unfortunately I'm not a "designer" n my opinions dont really count, so what do I know...???

Nah I dont actually "own" the website myself...n its too complicated to explain! lol :D

Back on subject...I would like to think that the design team will consider making slight improvements to the name/avatar area.

Moose, the void horizontal space isn't, and wasn't intended to be exactly that; void horizontal space. The idea is, and was to pull in customized gamercard data to the right, data most people like to display; thus illeviating the need for it in your signature. Of course, like all things here, perfection never really has time provail at MatchBox360, and so the forums got launched, before their prime...

As for the argument on Horizontal or Vertical 'user info' spaces, well it's a bit of a null argument. If it's vertical, as you suggest Moose, most of the data piled line after line would cause a height typically higher than the 2 sentences most people post on here. By this, take the H3F screen capture you see. All the data in that 'user info' area means that every post (irrelevant of the actual post data) will be roughly 600pixels high, and greater if he writes an essay.

:)

Obviously the forums arent currently in their finished state, but over the next few weeks steve n stew will be customising n tweaking certain areas of the forum. It was due to necessity that the new vB forums were launched asap, hence the reason threads like this arise because ppl dont know the full design plans that will added over time. Props to the coding team for doing such a good job in such a short space of time.

pull in customized gamercard data

This will slow things down a bit wont it? I hope if you do implement this there is an option to enable/disable it, if i want to see soemones gamercard i can open a new window easy enough.

As for the sig Avatar thing you should be allowed a slightly wider but shorter avatar, the sigs 600x50 is enough.

You know.. When Jay says things like that you know the site is about to blow up...

My 2 pence?

Keep the gamer cards off the front, I don't care what other people's rep is or what junk they have been playing and I am sure they don't care to see mine either.

I'm glad you raised the issue, Moose. When Zyber told me that the forum was going to be changed from what it was to vBulletin, I was really happy as it gave me the incentive I need to start posting here. I like the community but I just couldn't post on Vanilla, I thought it was ugly. No offence.

Now that the vBulletin has been implemented, I am rather underwhelmed as it's one of the worst forum skins I've saw for vBulletin and I've been using them for years. I know you wanted to keep it similar to Vanilla and you've done a good job in that respect. Maybe I'm just a sucker for the original vBulletin layout. It's plain and simple and I like it that way. I know some vBulletin forums have a skin selector so every member can have the skin they want. Maybe you could implement that feature here?

Maybe you could implement that feature here?

It would only work for the homepage and standard themed forums (any withOUT a custom header or complete style) because the way vB assigns a theme to a forum means overriding user selections.

Yeah at least have a disable option, this is about the only forum I can make my way around on dial-up.

Please leave it the way it is...It looks alot better than standard VB forums.

If you really want a gamercard on here why don't you desgin one on Livecard or create your own to blend with the design and stick it on the right hand side of the Username.

I also agree that all Username Headers should be the same height

*ahem* Wouldn't want to use the default gamercards anyhow. As for this skin as a VB skin, wow... You guys must be blind if you think the usual table looking designs from 1997 are better looking! Next you'll be asking for < MARQUEE >

It didnt bother me before but the "Report, edit" line is annoying me now, I think it would be better if that replaced the "next thread, last thread" line that I never use...
