Earlier this week Sony released a statement claiming that they had won a Emmy for the Sixaxis controller. Well it would seem that that this was not correct and the award was actaully for the Dual Shock controller.

Shame the Sixaxis doesn't use one of the main features of the award winning Dual shock then ;)

SCEA was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.
Oh really? What a surprise....

Hmm, this is probably wrong, but didn't Sony get sued ages ago for the Dual Shock controller on the basis that it was patented by another company?

Immersion took Microsoft and Sony to court over patent infringements regarding force feedback technology. Microsoft settled out of court and licenced the technology from Immersion, thats why the 360 controller has rumble. Sony went to court and lost.

And I stand corrected.. But then how come Nintendo got away with it with the N64's rumble packs?

Good question Jay. I did a bit of searching and came up with this:

[QUOTE]Nintendo is another matter. Immersion has never had any dealings with Nintendo, according to Mr. Viegas. Moreover, Nintendo holds their own patents for their rumble devices, and so far there have been no inquiries as to whether these patents are close enough to cause conflict between the two companies (according to some on Slashdot, Nintendo builds the motors differently, so the same result is produced through a different method). Immersion won

Wasnt Nintendo going to sue M$ over the patent for the XBL messaging service or something like that?

I think Nintendo saw business sense and decided not to file a lawsuit against the biggest bad ass on the planet which has lawyers dressed as storm troopers.

I didn't realise it was in 2004. Time does indeed fly past. Thanks for digging it up.

Sony Computer Entertainment America has confirmed that the Emmy award it picked up this week was for the Dual Shock controller - and not the Sixaxis pad, as originally stated.

The confusion began after the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences contradicted a statement issued by Sony regarding the Technology and Engineering trophy, with a spokesperson saying, "I would like to confirm that Sony did not win for their PS3 controller, they won for their Dual Shock analog controller."

Now Sony has issued a new statement which blames the confusion on a "miscommunication". It reads: "In a press release dated January 8, 2007, SCEA announced we had been recognized by NATAS with a Technology and Engineering Emmy Award for the Sixaxis wireless controller.

"Due to miscommunication between the two organisations, this information was incorrectly reported." The statement concludes with confirmation that SCEA in fact won the award for the PS2 Dual Shock controller and an apology for any confusion caused.

Miscommunication?

Well 6 axis or dual shock, Sony really shouldn't be getting that award.
