Rumours are circulating that Microsoft is preparing to steal some of the PS3's thunder with a major update to the xbox 360, which when launched may become the Xbox 361.
Lack of an HDMI on the current incarnation of Microsoft's games console is seen as a major limitation when compared to Sony's offering and along with the addition of a 120Gb hard drive will be the two main revisions to the Xbox 360.
Two of the main reasons why gamers say they would be prepared to consider forking out a not inconsiderable 400 pounds + on a PS3 are 1. Lack of high quality transfer to a HD enabled TV, and 2. A meagre 20GB hard drive.
Of course there is no confirmation from Microsoft at the current time that upgrades in any shape or for will be applied to the Xbox 360, but at some point their games console will have to offer some competitive edge over the competition.
Subject to more speculation is what Microsoft are planning for their HD drive and the possibility that they will bundle an HD DVD into the standard Xbox package (its currently an optional add-on) . With a significant price advantage over the PS3, this could be the route to claw back competitive advantage and all important sales volume.
Microsoft could very well surprise us all and offer consumers a completely different alternative to what has been rumoured, watch this space to find out ?
