View Full Version : Our New Home

Just thought I'd introduce you to our new server before I ship it off to long forgotten lands somewhere above Birmingham. After a couple of years of dealing with shared hosting and the hassles of absolutely no control over anything, we recently upgraded to a virtual server. Biggest. Mistake. Ever. Jay's shiny rails front end doesn't like the cramped accomodation, and has a habit of hitting our memory limit and dying horribly, as you all may have noticed :p
After all this, we decided that a dedicated server was our next move. Unfortunately, since we all run this place for kicks, noone could afford to shell out for anything rack mounted (although I so nearly got one from uni :o). I recently upgraded to an Intel Mac Mini, and as such, had my old PowerPC beast kicking around. So anyway, we found it a nice home in sunny Manchester, and it's soon to be winging its way up there to prepare itself for you lot.
Without further ado, here it is, in all its californian white and brushed metal glory:

For those who care, some stats:
1.25Ghz PPC Processor
512MB RAM
40GB Hard Drive
It's currently running Gentoo (http://gentoo.org) Linux, with Apache 2, PHP 5, Rails 1.1.6 and all the other mod cons. Hopefully, this will give us the flexibility and power (well, comparitively) to put some of our previously impossible ideas into action.
Unfortunately, the switch to the new server involves approximately 24 hours downtime. This will probably happen in the next week or two, but I'll let you know when we have a better idea of timings.

It's probably going to be worth it. Thanks for the hard work and thanks for the heads up about the down time.
Hahaha, exactly the same specs as my Mac Mini, should be good as a server, can't be any more annoying than this thing is for doing lots of design work on it...
Buy me a Mac Pro and I'll give you this Mini as a second server :D

Yeah, I finally gave up on it as a desktop earlier this year. Upgraded to the 1.66Ghz Intel Core Duo and doubled my RAM. So much nicer! This one should be plently for processing the odd php page this place requires. Be interesting to see how many users it could handle at one though.

Not sure about that one yet. We definitely aren't paying for large amounts of high speed bandwidth, but if we can get something cheap it's a possibility I guess :)

Yeah my dad's got the 1.66 Core Solo and 512Bm RAM, blitzes my mini at everything but Photoshop which is under rosetta so is expected.

Just a quick update, the mini finally went in the post yesterday, so it should be in place ready for testing by the weekend.

Nah, they don't make 'em like they used to. Old school minis all the way :P
Anyway, the server is in place and holding up nicely. Changeover could happen as soon as this weekend, we'll keep you posted.

Yeah, we've bought it one of these (http://www.nandahome.com/products.clocky.html), if that doesn't work we're screwed.

well, for the 5th day in a row, i've logged in at 8.05am for a little "arriving at work forum whoring", and "this server is still having a little snooze" pops up on screen. 1 hour later, and here i am......
..... you really need to have a little chat about all those late nights, young man :p

At long last, we're actually ready to move. Jay finally persuaded the front end to boot on the new server today, so we'll be shifting everything across this weekend.
This does mean that we'll disappear for around 24hrs, but hopefully it'll be worth it.

Don't know if anybody actually noticed, but we shifted across a few hours ago. It all seems to have happened nicely, but if you spot anything odd, gimme a shout. My email should actually work now :p

Well last night i was speaking to Dragonov and we were talking about a post on the Matchbox360 forum so to see what he was talking about i tried loading up the homepage and it came up with a message something along the lines of
"Things might be iffy for a few days, We are moving to a shiny new server.........
See you on the other side
FiveOhOne"
Thought it was a bit wierd Dragonov89 and other people being able to go on Matchbox and me not being able to view the homepage or even by pass the homepage and go straight onto the forum.
I took a screenshot of it which should be below.

Yeah, that's perfectly normal. Since we moved servers, we had to change where the url points, and those changes reach different people at different times. You were still looking at the old one while your mate was already being pointed to the new one.
