I'm looking to speed up my PC to allow me to stream videos while editing more effectively and i'm not intrested in PC gaming. My 1.01 ghz processor lags when video editing which wont do when it fits my chosen career.
Originally I looked at Mac's for their craft advantages on the I-life suite (I-dvd / I-movie) but was knocked back by the price of a Mac Mini (

Well that all depends, what motherboard have you got?
If you dont know which one you have, google the words 'check motherboard' the first link should tell you how to find out.

Yeah, you really dont need to spend huge amounts of money to get a decent video editing set up. I do a lot of video editing, and all i did was upgrade my CPU (and add a little more ram).

Far as i'm aware to replace the processor means replacing the motherboard and by the time I do that I may as well have assembled my own pc.
I can't find any links to my motherboard type on google.

Do you know anything else about your cpu etc?

Well, from a google serach, this is your Mobo then?
Your Mobo (http://www0.uk.shopping.com/xPF-Asus-A7S8X-MX-SIS71G-chipset-Skt-A-128MB-shared-VGA-8xAGP-slot-LAN-6ch-audio-USB2)
Socket A - So you want a Socket A Athlon XP Processor @ 333fsb - Not sure what's the maximum the mobo can support upto Ghz wise.
So you'll just want to upgrade your CPU and RAM
RAM - Go with PC2700 (ddr333) @ 1gb - Not sure if it you can go 2gb with ddr333 as I think (not sure) that you have to use a lower fsb to have more.
I.e. A Mobo can support 3gb of ddr200 - 2gb of ddr266 - 1gb ddr333
So yours might only be able to take 1gb ddr333 - 1gb should be good enough though, maybe go with a 1gb ddr266 to begin with? leaving you room to upgrade to another 1gb of ddr266 in the future.
As for Socket A's I can't be bothered to look :P Last I knew, they were hard to get hold of from any computer shops around, so there probably will be some on the webbernet.

There will be a load on ebay. I had no problem selling a Pentium 4 1.6Ghz, so it's not like people dont want older stuff anymore.
And yeah, 1 Gb is fine for video editing.
Hope to see some of your finished videos!
