rather listen to my mum than pantera, get with it man, pantera are in the past now. anyone who's anyone has listened to them for like 300 years already, got bored, and got into some decent metalI'm sorry i'm not cool because i listen to music that wasnt made within the last 3 months :(
Anyone who has "listened to them and got bored and moved on to real metal" is a faggot, and proberbly a scene kid who likes the bands because of the social staus it gives them. Liek the song "Walk", amazing song, but ruined by people who wanna look cool. That goes for bands as well. I've been to see a lot of metalcore bands, including Trivium and Avenged Svenfold, and all of them covered Walk. This didnt please me, it pissed me off. They're blatenly doing it do be all "hey look at our influences, huh?"
Can you please explain what you mean by decent metal? Becuase Pantera pretty much INVENTED groove metal? They're a very, very influencial band and always did whatever the hell they wanted without giving into trends. I dont really know what could be less decent about them? The lyrics are straight from the heart.
So yeah, what is decent metal to you?

yes, i'm sure they're all nice guys and all, but don't you think all these new bands are just a bit, you know, middle-of-the-road? a bit average? they're hardly doing anything that hasn't been done before, are they? (i'm assuming that most of these groups are guitar bands)

*dons flame-proof pyjamas*They're gutiar bands so it's all been done before? I dont see the logic. However, i do agree with you about the new bands thing, espaiclly the rise of "indy" bands.. i mean, how can they possibly be indy when they are signed to the biggest labels in the music industry and they're spending huge amounts of money on them to create the type of sound that the masses will lap up and cash in for the labels!
Chet Webley
07-03-2007, 06:27 PM
They're gutiar bands so it's all been done before? I dont see the logic.
becuase all the 'new' stuff is regugitated 'old' stuff - razorlite doing american folk with electric guitars, kaiser chiefs doing 'new' punk.
same old riffs, same old rhythms. every new band seems to be like X old band with a new point of view - they may be singing about new things, but the music hasn't really progressed has it?
the only guitar person i can think of who is truly different, or original is 'buckethead', but then i'm not into guitar bands. i'm only going by what i hear on the radio, and i've been around long enough to know that none of it is really 'new'. it may be new to some of you younger guys - can anyone show me some guitar stuff that's truly 'original?

i'm only going by what i hear on the radio, anUh, there's your problem. Radio has NEVER been a half decent source of good/technical/original music, they play what SELLS, and what people will enjoy, espacialyl people who are not into music. Which is mostly yes, old stuff with a slightly different tint on it, or just really tacky stuff which happens to be catchy.
And original guitar stuff? Are you talkinn about new bands, or older bands here, becuase i could list loads of genre-influencing bands.
Pantera, started the groove metal scene which in turn helped make nu-metal, and you could say has influences in thrash.
Slayer, fathers of thrash metal, many bands today are influenced from the aggreessive and fast riffs.
Metallica, they were pretty good at selling out and generally being all round cunts.
As for modern ones though, try Mastodon, its heavy progressive metal. Dream Theatre for progressive rock/metal, the same with Tool. Fear Factory led the way for industrial metal.
As for rock, Clutch are amazing stoner rock, very catchy and very varied. Then there is the lieks of Dragonforce, famous for being fast and pushing power metal into the mainstream.

It's not been played to death ala Black Sunday/Skull & Bones which is a plus, but its just more of a relaxed vibe to it.. Stuff like Stoned Raiders & Illusions make it for a much album for when you just kicking around. Goes down well with 40 oz to freedom by Sublime, Sunday afternoon type tunes.

Well, it's all a matter of taste. For me, music has to be like a punch to the heart: painful yet exhilarating.

More due to the fact that it has sentimental lyrics which are cringe-worthy. A lot of bands would stand to benefit if they quit trying to dab in poetry and writing, and affixing their idiotic, and intellectually-hollow rhymes to their music.
Just discard the preconceived notion that you need lyrics to make great music. Listen to it again without expecting lyrics.
